The guys who came to assess and fix the fireplaces into my house were excellent, efficient, and left no mess at all, which is a major achievement with old chimneys!

Mar 10,2021Benefit of doubt with 3 stars as i don't know what to expect regards cleaning a chimney and i have only just purchased the property. However, 3 weeks after the cleaning, i note a huge pile of soot on the floor below the chimney opening (I have an open alcove rather than a fire). I can only assume this has come from the inside of the chimney. For the price paid, and a service which was concluded in about 15 minutes start to finish, i am surprised to see this soot. But, as mentioned, perhaps this is to be expected, or perhaps i am supposed to instal some kind of soot catching tray above the alcove. Regardless, I can say that the gentlemen were very courteous, friendly, arrived in time and that there was no mess left behind.

Feb 04,2021We had used Old Mill since 2015 for installation of our woodburner and on-going maintenance and sweeping of our chimney. Last September we booked them to sweep the chimney before the winter. They were at our property for about 25 mins, not very long, and we didn't see them go up on the roof to inspect our chimney. We were given our annual Sweep Safe certificate with all boxes checked "acceptable", no work recommended. Seven weeks later we had a chimney fire that we had to call the fire brigade out for. We caught it early but had we not (or had we been asleep) we could have had a very dangerous situation. We didn't understand how this could happen. We had been using seasoned good wood and had only had the chimney inspected and swept seven weeks before. The fire brigade advised to have the chimney checked before using the fire again, so we contacted Old Mill and asked them to come out. They came out and inspected the flue liner and chimney stack using cameras and photos. Photos showed significant degradation to our chimney stack which had been letting water into the chimney. We have also subsequently found soot deposits in the flue indicating that the chimney had not been properly swept/vacuumed. This is what caused the fire. We asked Old Mill to explain this and they would not. It was evident from the pictures that they have been signing off our chimney as "fit for use" for several years when it clearly was not. We asked Old Mill for a quote for reparation of the chimney for which they wanted an unreasonable amount. We tried to enter into communication with them to resolve the matter amicably but they refused, even when we said we would take this matter up with HETAS. Due to all of the above we were without the use of our stove throughout November, December and January, when we would have benefited most from its use. We have now had another company come and replace our liner as we will never let Old Mill Chimneys near our property again. We are using the same stove but the other company have replaced connection flue pieces leaving a much better looking installation than Old Mill Chimneys had been signing off as fit! NOT RECOMMENDED
