We paid considerable sums for these SEO 'services' but were completely disappointed with the quality and service. Communication with was very difficult, it was hard receiving a reply once every couple of days when we were writing to them everyday because there were mistakes in their work that were costing us money and clients. I gave them my URL, they came back with keywords for the niche of my product and a bunch of forum threads. Then they constantly posted backlinks (drip-feed I think) in these threads relevant to my product. I had access to an online report where I easily saw all he backlink details. The URL I gave them was an UTM one so I could track all the traffic that came from these backlinks. This is on top of the fact that my Search Engine ranking and SEO metrics were increasing.
