The ultimate platform for worldbuilding! Although it's a bit pricey, Worldanvil is certainly worth its cost. It's an amazingly well-built application that's sure to swallow up large interconnected lore bases of imaginary worlds, especially great for writers and RPG players. It supports many types of articles, an internal cross-referencing system, timelines, efficient interactive maps and a bunch of other impressive features. There is SO MUCH DETAIL you can fill in when you actually dig into the platform you wouldn't believe it. They've practically thought of everything, which makes you understand that it's a tool made for players by players. Some improvements can still be made regarding available storage space for pictures, placing of images and localization. Overrall, a solid product that is no doubt worth trying.

As with others who have also given this company a low rating, I was victim of subscription-trapping. They don't give fair notice of auto-renewal as stipulated by the "fair subscription terms" sheet produced by the AMC based on the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Avoid this company.

Not only does World Anvil produce great content that's been useful in my creative process, but the community that's been built around the content is wonderful as well. And I've received some pretty great customer service care over the years when needed.

I bought a world anvil subscription after hearing a lot of online reviews and advertisements from YouTubers. It proved to be an extremely useful service for intense world building, yet I only found myself using it part of the time. I attribute this to my own difficulty in learning the site, and I think it can be extremely helpful if you focus down and figure out how it works.

The absolute best tool for homebrew Dungeon Masters and prospecting or experienced authors. I could not have the world I have built for my campaign, it makes it so easy to build living worlds at a professional level, not to mention the inspiration prompts that they give you to assist. Thank you World Anvil!

Hello, I've been using World Anvil for a little while now trying to incorporate a two-year-old organically grown homebrewed world into a well-organized world that people can continue to enjoy. I can tell you that World Anvil is invaluable in this process. The tools are amazing, the functionality is massive but simple to pick up if you just focus on one thing at a time. However, the best part about this is if you are having a hard time figuring out even the most simple of the things the team or people all the way to the top will go out of their way to help you! I wouldn't look anywhere else.

World Anvil just made my dnd-games so much easier to organize and therefor my life so much relaxter. I love all the features, which are a bit overwhelming at first, but when you take the time to study them: it helps you so much. Thanks World Anvil, keep up the amazing work!

World Anvil is such a wonderful place! It's an online space- a community- where lots of creatives come together and support each other <3 The founders are so real, down-to-earth, and available! They are very active in the community and help with any questions you may have. Dimi and Janet are such sweet beans. They were running the train all on their own and doing the best job. God bless them. They have now even hired more helpers to assist. They add updates all the time. They listen to the community. They add new products such as manuscripts and whiteboards-- WA is altogether an awesome dream being manifested more and more every day. God bless them all. So happy to have started with them early on and watch them grow from something awesome to something super amazing-- and continue to keep growing bigger and better with every passing moment!

WorldAnvil is so much better than trying to organize my thoughts and ideas into notebooks or a series of documents. Easy to understand how to build up a world, link things together, and create an intricate and detailed world. Perhaps most importantly, the community is incredibly supportive and helpful in pushing me forward. The whole team at WorldAnvil is similarly impressive for being a small group. It's been such a boon in my writing and I would heartily recommend it to other creators.

I signed up with a year’s membership, used the service for 3 months. It was ok but the UI is clumsy and the lack of automation meant using it to write a full campaign was too much work. 9 months later my subscription has renewed for another full year automatically, i have been refused a refund even though no reminder was sent before I was charged. This is a predatory company trying to steal money from customers who no longer use their software. *update* a full refund was provided after this review was posted

I had an issue with their auto-renewal billing, with regards to no notice being sent prior to being billed for a yearly subscription. But they were kind enough to reimburse me for unused portion of the service I wanted my review to reflect that.

Really great customer service. Their suite of tools is comprehensive, powerful, and constantly-expanding, but that does come with a bit of a learning curve. That said, they have a tutorial video for... basically every function. It's ridiculously complete, and I say this as somebody who spends half their day recording training videos for internal use: they're setting a high bar, haha. To top that off, their customer service is fast, cordial, and all around pretty great. (Makes sense, as it's pretty much the same core team handling everything). Bottom line, I love this as a gamer, and I desperately wish I'd been using it when I was writing fiction semi-fulltime. Would have spared me hours of headache.

WorldAnvil is a unique platform for people to build out their world. It offers so many possibilities, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by it all. At the moment of writing this review, WorldAnvil is still in development by optimizing and adding features, so you can even expect more in the future. WorldAnvil offers a whole bunch of features for worldbuilders and writers including various article templates, categories, tags, maps (with tagging) image uploads, interlinking, autolinking, random tables, statblocks a whole suite for novelists and so much more. Even though there are a lot of customization options in WorldAnvil, you can use whatever features you want or not use them. You're not really forced into using anything or everything really. When it comes to the visual design of your page, it is mostly done through html/css. I'm personally not proficient in these things, so a friend did it for me. The basic styles are fine, but if you want something very personalized, it may cost some time/effort. An alternative to this is people on worldanvil who may be commissioned to style your world. Which brings me to my next big point, apart from the guides and articles WorldAnvil publishes to help their users, a way to navigate all the features is through asking the community and/or developers, who are very helpful and able to assist you. Just like other pieces of software, there's a learning curve and you just got to spend some time with it, but the many good people within the community and team are quick to respond to any questions you may have, especially on the discord. As a content creator and illustrator I have used WorldAnvil as an archive of all my content and a way to build out my world and its lore. Organizing and interlinking is made easy through worldanvil's systems. The Sage tier allowed me to get a custom url so I could fully apply my own branding and style as well. The events hosted by WorldAnvil have been inspiring, offered a nice sense of writing community and were a great addition to the content of my world as well. In conclusion, knowing that WorldAnvil is still being optimized I rated the platform 5 stars even though there may be some minor drawbacks such as the learning curve or ease of styling your world for people who don't know html/css. There are many capabilities the platform already serves which have made my worldbuilding and business easier. The many features that are still being developed can only add onto that! So what are you waiting for? Grab your hammer and go worldbuild!

As a fantasy writer and fledgling Game Master, I’ve always had trouble organizing my notes and keeping tabs on all the locations, characters, and lore of my world. So many hours of my time have been lost because I kept falling down rabbit holes searching for that one detail about some minor character that I knew I’d written down…somewhere. There had to be a better way than sifting through hundreds of documents and folders, so when I heard about World Anvil through NaNoWriMo, I knew I’d found everything I’d been looking for! I haven’t utilized all of the features available to my guild tier yet, but I look forward to playing around with them as it becomes necessary for my work. Features I love: ~Search and article linking -->Probably my ultimate favorite and most-used feature. With a few scant letters, I can find whatever I’m looking for in seconds. ~Template-specific prompts -->For example, in a “Geography” article, there are sections provided for me to fill in the History, Flora & Fauna, Natural Resources, etc. for the location. These can also be totally disregarded based on the specific article’s needs. ~Article sharing -->I can choose who can see what articles, which is especially helpful in my RPG campaign that is set in the same world as the novel I’m working on (because it avoids too many spoilers!) ~Articles for inspiration and challenge -->I never would have thought to write about, say, a dead language from my world until one of the prompts popped up on my dashboard. Pretty thought provoking stuff! ~Campaign organization for RPGs -->Whether it’s sharing campaign-related info or scheduling our next session, I can get it to my players in one fell swoop. Features I haven’t utilized yet but am looking forward to playing with: ~Timelines -->It seems particularly helpful for keeping track of the various families and lineages in my world, but I haven’t ventured there yet to see if it’s easy to use or not. ~Interactive maps -->I remember reading that a different software is required to actually create the map, but once it’s there it can link to articles. ~Discussion boards -->My world is mostly for personal use, but I like that there’s a discussion board feature available for campaigns so my players could give ideas. Features that could use some improvement: ~I find the article list a bit clunky to navigate sometimes. There’s options for parent categories and the like, but when it comes to actually creating a new article, using “Quick Content Creation” is definitely the way to go while adding any applicable categories through the article itself. ~I’ve had a weird thing happen in a campaign where a player created his character, but he doesn’t show up in the Protagonists section on the Campaign homepage, even though it says he’s part of the party/world itself. Other players have successfully joined the campaign, though so I don’t think it’s a link issue. Not sure how to fix this, but I haven’t reached out to customer support yet so it could just be an oversight on my part. ~I do wish there was an option for offline creation. Sure, I could just use a word processor and manually update it when there’s wifi again, but I think it would be a cool feature so people could have the benefits of the website while traveling or off the grid. Overall: I’m a satisfied customer who feels the price of my subscription is well worth the product! For all the time I’ve spent using the site so far, it’s fairly intuitive and user-friendly. Anything I can’t figure out I can usually find in the tutorials. I look forward to interacting with more of the features as my world grows and my projects progress. I highly recommend giving WA a try if you’re the worldbuilding sort, just make sure to read the fine print so you don’t sign up for something you didn’t mean to.

I was a game designer. I was a creator of worlds, or I wanted to be. I had designed an RPG, but I needed a well developed setting to play it in. I had lots of notes, artwork, and various and sundry content for my new world but I was feeling overwhelmed with how to organize it. Then I saw a sponsor link for World Anvil and clicked on it. As I read through their feature set, I realized I had found exactly what I needed to wrangle all my content into a palatable and organized presentation for both myself, as a world builder, and for my players. As I have used World Anvil to organize and flesh out my content, I am constantly amazed at how well it assists me in the creation process. World Anvil has built an approachable interface that belies the depth of features it provides you. I often find myself wishing for a feature and it appears! For example, I recently said to myself “Wish I could create a placeholder for this term so when I finalize the term, I don’t have to find and replace it.”, and voila! I discovered they had a feature called “variables” for just such a need. The tool is extremely well thought out in both presentation and feature set such that is grows with your level of expertise, from amature to expert creator. With all my excitement about the product, I do have my some areas that are a challenge. For example, I have found it difficulty to figure out how to get my pages to look exactly like I want them; some places I can order items by dragging, others I need to provide weights, and if I want fancy text editing, I need to learn a formatting language called BBCode. And while they do provide many templates to change the style of your pages, some of the templates they provide have layout issues. You can always drop down to using CSS to style your work (I haven’t tried this yet, so I cannot comment on how good the CSS support is), but that is not a skillset all creators have. Another strong point of World Anvil is the support and the community. First off, the training videos seem to answer almost every question I have, and when they don’t, the community is friendly and helpful, including helping me through the formatting challenges noted above. The owners of World Anvil are always out front with regular Twitch.tv streams if that is your thing, and you can even vote on the next features to get added; and they are very consistent with updates to the tools. I can’t recommend World Anvil highly enough, so much so, I’ve helped others join the community. If you are looking for a place to not only easily create but to share your creations easily with the world, World Anvil is the right place for you.

Joined free August 2019. Didn't use it. Came back for another look in December when I had more time, right when the writing event WorldEmber happened. All the people talking about all the things to write immediately draw me in, making me write my a lot of stuff. Hooked! I raised my guild level several times and now 2 years later I have made about 50 character sheets and statblocks for RPG systems, wrote 132k words, created many maps and even won a contest or two. Got to know all the nice people, including Janet and Dimitris and their team. Don't want to miss it anymore.
