I took the Level 2 driver training with Paul and it was a very interesting, engaging and exciting experience altogether, more than I expected actually! Paul is a great trainer with lots of experience on track or outside, impressive engineering knowledge about race cars, he made the 2 days very enjoyable, gave me lots of valuable info and "trade secrets" and helped me to gain the driving skills required for Level 2. I definitely recommend CAT Driver Training for everyone interested in getting better at everyday driving or in the race car industry in general.
All aspects of this experience day were impeccably organised. The CAT team were very welcoming and professional. The instuction was excellent and the series of driving scenarios were challenging, rewarding and enjoyable.
A tremendous experience with the CAT Driver Training team. During the session I learnt so much about my car, the instruction was first class and supported with great detail as to how and why the car responds to driver input, this was then all put in to practice behind the wheel. If you want to get a great feeling for your car and improve your skill I couldn't recommend CAT Driver Training highly enough. See you next year for the steering masterclass. Many thanks Adrian
My objectives were achieved. I wanted to have a better understanding of my car. Threshold braking and vanishing point theory were explained and demonstrated really well. The day was superbly organised by a very friendly team who really know what they are talking about.
The work done on the Track Level 2 Optimisation Course consolidated and then really, really extended the skills I’d learned on Level 1. If there was a single exercise that encapsulated the precision of the teaching on this day it was the work done on the dynamics pad – an 900m2 of unencumbered tarmac – on improving the technique of taking corners greater than 120°. A corner of about 150° was laid out with cones marking both the inside and outside limits of the notional ‘track.’ This corner was taking first of all with entirely straight-line threshold braking, but with each approach 10% less braking was completed in a straight line and was instead trailed into the corner. This shift from straight-line to trail-braking was increased until most of the time on the brakes was spent in the corner – with an astonishing increase in corner grip and speed. The notional ‘track’ of cones allowed you to experience the consequences of understeer because of insufficient trail braking without actually ending up in the gravel-trap or the tyre-wall. When we took these skills out onto the Alpine loops in the Caterham I couldn’t really believe the astonishingly improved levels of grip and increased corner speed I was getting – even on a dampish track. I’d been on the Alpine loops before on Level 1 and thought I had driven this challenging and long sequence of bends and massive elevation changes pretty quickly. But this was something else. I got the car stopped, turned and spat out of the corner at speeds I couldn’t believe possible. I can’t wait to put it into practice on the track. As with Level 1, everything we did in the car was underpinned by explanations of what was happening in engineering terms to make the car stop, turn and accelerate so much more quickly than before. The ultimate aim was simply to go faster, more safely and more confidently, and this was partly achieved and made believable by an introduction the physics or science of speed, if you like, in the incredibly useful classroom sessions. Not cheap, but worth every cent!
Excellent conclusion to the 6 day race course at CAT, I had a great time and learned a lot with Colin over 2 days at Bedford and Donington. I highly recommend CAT driving school
Fantastic day , sun was shining for a change which enhanced the experience. Paul the instructor explained everything and made it easy to understand and gave me a lot of confidence to push the car harder than I thought I could. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend.
The best performance driving training, excellent instructors which help develop your skills in a safe environment.
This is an amazingly educating experience with fantastic individuals, led by Colin imparting their skills, knowledge and experience to participants. The training follows a logical process where each stage is taught, learned and mastered (?!) before moving on to the next stage. The facilities at Millbrook are amazing and, even though this involves fast driving, it is incredibly safe.
Just had a fantastic day at CAT. I’ve got 30+yrs of ordinary driving experience but wanted to learn more about the dynamics of my mid-engined car to get much more out of its capabilities. After initially discussing my objectives with Jo we decided on the “Road Level 3” course. I spent the day with Paul who had taken the time prior to review both what I wanted to achieve whilst also doing some research on the characteristics of the car. The day was bespoked to my personal objectives to introduce and improve correct techniques. It was immensely educational yet surpassed by the levels of enjoyment. The depth of knowledge and insights from Paul (and Steve) were first class. I left feeling far more informed and confident. I now have a platform of understanding to build on what will not only make me a safer driver, but also allow me to feel more connected with my car and hence dialling up the fun-factor in the process! I cannot recommend this highly enough to anyone in a similar situation. Thank you Paul, Steve, Jo & Lynne for an unforgettable day! RW, East Sussex
An incredibly insightful and fun three days training with Colin and the CAT team. The instructors were highly knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, with safety as their primary focus. This showed in the level of detail and care they took to provide exactly what we were after. We now have a far better understanding of dynamic car handling, road safety and the limits of performance driving. Couldn’t recommend the CAT driver training highly enough if you’re looking to increase your safety knowledge and understand where the limits are on your own car. A real eye opener and we are now looking to continue advancing our driving skills. Thank you --
This was a further day's training with Colin at CAT, with the aim of building on the skills which had been nurtured over the previous two sessions (see my earlier reviews for details). Suffice to say that I came away with very worthwhile refinements to my technique and enhanced "muscle memory", and the objective measurements to demonstrate the skills upgrade. Recommended.
Took the CAT Track Level 1 course after a shared day session with other drivers. Brilliant to build on some of the skills learned on the first day and took in some of the Level 2 features as well. Paul was a brilliant instructor again, taking time to explain things in a way which I understood and adressed all of my (sometimes stupid) questions! Can’t wait to go back for Level 3.
We all had a great day, very well organised, really informative, fun and very useful. Thank you.
Level 3 Advanced Performance Course Not sure what to criticise about the day my wife and I spent with Paul… He took time to understand our objectives – both individual and joint – and then structured the day in such a way that by the end we thought we’d achieved them all. A man of true patience and happy to spend as much or as little time with each of us as needed on each task to make sure we ‘got it’ (some my wife ‘got’ quicker than me and vice versa) – but at no time did we feel rushed. These days are not cheap, but are value for money – and not only increased confidence in our own abilities but also confidence in the ability of the car itself. We will certainly be back! (One note, and not a negative to CAT… We stayed at the nearby (and recommended) Carrington Arms the night before; food and accommodation was excellent – but they do not start breakfast service in the morning until 8am, meaning we had to skip in order to not be late arriving at Millbrook)
My 3rd session with CAT. The best instruction one can hope for, and this time it was on track with Colin. Every time you walk away with measurable improvements. It's simply beyond belief.
Fantastic training session with the team at CAT. Would highly recommend their professionalism, passion and knowledge. Looking to now book a follow up course...
Very enjoyable day learning better driving techniques, limits of grip, handling techniques, etc. instructor was great. Very patient and explained everything very well. Would recommend the courses to anyone wanting to learn more about car control
I can highly recommend CAT Driver Training. I did the Over Grip Limit course with Colin. CAT are actually based on the grounds of the fantastic UTAC Millbrook proving ground so have unmatched facilities for training. It was a fantastic day. I basically spent most of the day sideways in the CAT fleet Caterham on the skid pan that we had to ourselves. Colin is a great trainer with years of experience. The objective of the course was to get "comfortable with being uncomfortable" and it certainly achieved that for me through spending loads of actual driving time exploring the limit and going beyond it. This training day ticked all the boxes for me and I'm looking forward to putting some of these learnings into practice in my next race. I will definitely be returning to CAT for future training.

Sep 02,2023I took part in a 'Performance - Track day' course at UTAC Millbrook. I'll put the summary up top and then some of my thoughts of the day. Summary: The course costs £535, you use your own car, and perform different driving exercises over a full day (0830-1630) which results in about 90 minutes of actual driving activity. You will experience the 'mile straight' performing high speed braking activities, the 'high speed banked track' travelling up to 120 MPH, the 'dynamic pad' exploring the limits of grip on the car and finally the 'handling circuit' which for me was the highlight of the day. The organisation on the day was exceptional and there was truly nothing more the team could do for you, both Paul & Steve (instructors) were really friendly and knowledgeable not only about driving techniques but car set up too which was really refreshing. Behind the scenes Jo makes the day run smoothly and ensures you have all the refreshments you need to keep your energy throughout the day. 6 people were on the course with 2 instructors, you only drive with an instructor on site which results in quite a bit of standing around and chatting with the other participants, I feel the day would have run better with a ratio of 2-1 rather than 3-1 personally. The actual content of the course is great and this would have been a 5 star review if; - The ratio of instructors was 2-1 not 3-1. - The entrance of the UTAC building was more suitable for low vehicles (you may scrape the underneath of your car). - Enhanced lunch / pastries breakfast included. Overall a good day, valuable leaning points, great team, great facility, but sadly compared to other similar activities I've done felt poor value for money in comparison.
