Jun 30,2023As a new first-time customer, I did feel a little confused. TUW was recommended to me by AIA as a quick way to find a writer and get the project going. I went in opened the project, uploaded my outline, invited writers to the project and basically got no response at all. I reached out to support and they "boosted" my visibility. I did see and pick a writer who was marked "available now" and was removed for the reason later given to me that she had to much on her plate. It was then another writer was suggested to me but she was not going to be available for almost a month. It was back and forth for over a week and I just felt a lot of time was wasted in this process. I have no issues at all with the writer I ended up with or the editor.

I also love the order for the different tiers of writers/experts to choose from. The writers are very prompt with putting in their requests to work on projects and with responding and communicating which is a key factor for any successful business partnership. Overall, the experience has been wonderful all around!

Jun 14,2023I've been using The Urban Writers for 18 months now, and have had 4 books written and narrated so far, with the 5th in progress. A great many improvements have been made to the platform since I posted my first project. The first couple of times the different stages overlapped and it was very confusing, but the team have worked on improving the flow and it's paid off. The very best feature of The Urban Writers, in my opinion, is the customer service - from the admin team to support, order fulfilment and sales. I emailed them often, especially in the beginning when I didn't understand the platform and ran into problems. Without exception, the responses I received were courteous, helpful and very patient. I also like the fact you get taken from one step to the next of book production without having to keep contact different freelancers. There is the safety net of the agency behind you in case of problems. One thing to watch out for is that if you only pay for essential editing in your bundle, expect it to be more like proofreading. I didn't understand that at first, and thought I should wait for the editor to pick up on and fix the writer's errors. It has been my experience that it is important to monitor the writing quite closely while it is still in the writing stage and ask the writer to make changes as they go, rather than rely on the editing stage, when it is too late to make structural changes. I was surprised (and a little disappointed) to find that spelling and grammatical mistakes were still very much in evidence after the essential editing process, which my own PC spellchecker could pick up. As a cautionary note, carefully proof the manuscripts yourself, as the standards of editing are unreliable. Having said that, I did find a wonderful and extremely competent editor, who went over and above the brief of essential editing, but sadly she left. My cover designs have all been wonderful. When I did run into some problems, (trim size, wrong series title) the admin team helped me, although it took quite a few emails to resolve. The quality of the designs are great. If I could suggest improvements, it would be first and foremost to offer ePub formatting rather than just paperback formatting on Word, and secondly to do away with 'essential editing' completely and let the editors have a little longer to do a proper job of line and/or content editing, which is really what customers expect from editors. With the narration packages, I've been very pleased with the result. Again, just be aware that you must listen very closely to each and every file and ask the narrator to correct mistakes. In every case, the projects have taken a fair bit longer than the estimate, but I'd far rather have quality than speed. Finally, although my very first project nearly put me off ever using the Urban Writers again, I'm glad I persevered. I booked a personal video call 'tour' of the platform and I had the chance to explain the issues and confusions I'd been having. This was really worthwhile. The helpfulness, friendliness and patience of the individuals in the team and the freelancers themselves has been the winning factor.

The platform is so easy to use and your project is broken down into easy to follow steps along the way so that you do not become overwhelmed by the process.
