Tax is complicated; the cycle to work scheme is not. You choose a bike, hire it for an agreed length of time, then snap it up for a fraction of its original value. It's like a year-round sale, with interest free credit available in over 2,000 retailers nationwide.

Don't waste your time!! If you're looking to get a bike for the long run, you are better off finding a retailer that provides a finance option. The agreement that you sign isn't worth the paper it is printed on, as on mine it stated that the owner of the bike was my employer and that they will be in touch to advise the next steps after the 12-month period. After the 12-month period came to an end Cyclescheme advised that the agreement is wrong and that Cyclescheme remains the owner of the bike. They also tried to claim that basic tax was 35%... Cycle scheme agreement also failed to state anywhere that there was an option to purchase fee within the agreement, so I was unaware that this was coming, leaving me forced to hand back the £1,000 bike I had paid the full amount for or pay another charge in order to retain the bike. I was on annual leave when the scheme contacted me via my work email to inform me of the option to purchase fee and did not respond for around 2 weeks, only to come back to some rather threatening emails from them, pretty much calling me a tax dodger if I do not pay them now. Attempted to take my claim to the FOS but they said they do not have any jurisdiction over government schemes... If you do go ahead with this scheme be warned! I'd give them 0 stars if it were at all possible!!

Not fit for purpose. Other companies offer an easier and faster service. 2 years, 2 attempts and no bike. Cancelled the scheme but have threatening letters for final contract payment, even though I have a refund and never received a bike.

Sharp business practices, worst experience I've encountered, due to worsening medical issues since signing the application, I can no longer cycle . Despite never ordered or received a bike. Cycle Scheme have now taken 2 payments , and show no compassion to cancel my certificate. I've now had to order a bike that I may not be able to use.

The WORST website experience I have EVER experienced. I have still not been able to START APPLICATION as it still keeps sending me back to the same start page - I'm stuck in a loop. I work as a website manager so am well versed in using a website and this is SHOCKING!! I have an account, just need to login and get a certificate and the website can't even help me do that! 0/10

Update ××× can you then tell me, do you continue to hire bike after selecting own later? As that's extra money there too. Although you'd save tax, you'd pay way more than what it's worth if you own it 3 years later going to apply, but like all the other comments that agree with me, it's not worth it to pay 25 percent of the bike at the end. 2000 pound bike = 12 payments of say, 120 a month 1440. Then at the end you call it a transfer of owener ship, but the workplace bought the bike, and a reasonable hire price would be 30 a month. The money that were paying monthly should be seen as, paying of a debt to the workplace seems it's coming out of wages and they bought it. With the new rules that state a min end of term payment it's not worth it. You save pennies just so you can find a specific bike that supports the scheme. And to give the bike back after 12 months as alternative to paying a ownership fee is a complete joke. It used to be worth it, avoid

Signifiant hidden fees at the end - up to 20% of the cost of your purchase will wipe away any tax savings if you are not on a higher band. Avoid.

Rubbish I applied over 5 weeks ago and still waiting for the certificate. If they said you must wait up to 3 months before receiving your certificate, I wouldn't of applied. So just bear in mind your company can still take money from your wages, yet you have no bike.

This is my second bike with cycle scheme. I cancelled my first application due to price change. Very easy to apply for employer and employee. Very smooth process of application. Thanks to cyclescheme I can save my time, money. Brilliant idea!

Misleading. Basically no retailers allow this to be used for discounted bikes. Avoid! [Updated] I have checked with Certini, Giant stores etc. The cyclescheme certificate cannot be applied for models on sale, unless it is paid the full price. What point is the cyclescheme then? Plus, I called Cyclescheme for this, but there was no update afterwards.

What an absolute waste of time this is! First off, I decided to amend the value I needed. What they don't tell you is that this cancels the application and creates a new certificate giving you multiple certificate numbers. The website also crashes using a mobile device bringing you back to the login page each time you so can't actually use it. And finally the end of hire cost is mint blowing. It's just cheaper to get a bike on finance instead. Absolutely pointless service, best avoided.

I had a terrible, terrible experience with Cyclescheme which resulted in the worst outcome possible: I lost the possibility of joining a bike leasing scheme under my current employer. My employer requested a revision of the contract linked to my payroll as a result of a discrepancy. As Cyclescheme did not action the request in the required time (two days) without providing any help, explanation or whatsoever support, I ended up crossing the 12-month contract threshold thus losing the possibility of joining the scheme. The telephone customer service is useless (they can't action anything more than what customers can through the dedicated personal page) and email and online media contact points are simply not responsive.

Be very careful, at the end of the hire period they hit you with a massive bill to own the cycle that almost wipes out all of the tax benefit. I purchased a £4,600 MTB, my company paid for it in full on day one, they now want a further £1,150 for me to own it outright claiming this is due to HMRC rules!!! Yet other schemes have a minimal end of hire charge. Never again with this outfit. They even trying justify the fee stating look how much tax you have saved. Reply- thank you for your detailed response, however you are missing one simple point, other companies are not charging these ridiculous, can you explain why this ?

It bills you £12 every month and this does not include credit to cycle with - All cycle fees are on top of this, and it expects a minimum for your wallet to be able to ride. The biggest scam, wouldn't let me cancel and has costed me a total of £29 for a 60p trip because of this.

Frustratingly slow and inefficient - it's been over 6 weeks since I received and signed my hire agreement, 2 weeks since my initial monthly instalment has been paid, all adding to the poor advice and guidance from the cyclescheme telephone rep. I still don't have my voucher and as such, no bike nor accessories. In hindsight, I would rather have forgone the £200 savings and channelled it into my local bikeshop rather than being shackled by Blackhawk Network Holdings which a quick Google search will reveal are associated with a litany of sub-par customer service and questionable business practices. I also was unaware of how damaging the scheme was to UK retailers (the FT have written some revealing articles)! If you are willing and able to, I would implore you to avoid using the cyclescheme. It's a shame to experience a scheme which had such an admirable genesis story be so poorly executed.

My employer set up an account and invited us to apply for a voucher, which I did. However, their site will, for no apparent reason, not let me or my employer log onto our accounts. This means they can't approve my application, so I'm now stuck in limbo. Despite contacting them numerous times by email and phone they seem completely clueless to what the issue is, going so far as to offer 3 different reasons and promise of a resolution, none of which worked. My employer has been unable to even get a response from their techsupport and phone calls again make no difference. I'm sure if their site actually works then it's worth using but if there is any issue forget it. The time it's going to take to solve means any savings will be lost in unecessary travel costs that I'm incurring in the meantime. Update: the problem has now been resolved. However, it really wasn't the case that it was just a 'small' delay. Also the problem of getting anyone to either acknowledge there was an issue or even to reply to our requests for help fell well below what you would expect from Cyclescheme. There was one notable exception (Ben) who once they got in touch seemed to own the issue and finally got it resolved. I now have my certifcate and have adjusted my rating to reflect that when the scheme works it is a good thing.

Application in on the Monday, certificate issued Wednesday, bike waiting to be delivered Thursday. Four day turn a round. If you and your employer know what your doing it’s that easy.

Awful. It is a complete rip off. They demand money off you once you have paid for your bike in full. This is NOT in the contract that you sign but some conflicting information can be found on their website. You have to pay to own the bike that you have already paid for through you salary. Apparently, it is a payment demanded from HMRC as a payment to say thanks for letting me pay for my bike before tax. I am currently in contact with cycle scheme but their communication is indirect and confusing. I suggest not doing it.

Took money straight away from my wages, not used my e-mail voucher, found a bike at lower price from another retailer, but was told had to use full amount, the E- Voucher is not flexible to that amount. If only buying a bike for about £500 or under, the savings are less than 10% or lower, no good for low earners, applauding service when you want to change E-Voucher amount, this is a common problem with them, for common people like me
