Tax is complicated; the cycle to work scheme is not. You choose a bike, hire it for an agreed length of time, then snap it up for a fraction of its original value. It's like a year-round sale, with interest free credit available in over 2,000 retailers nationwide.
Started the scheme a couple of years ago, read the contract from top to bottom and seemed legit. After 2 years (1 year after all my payments have been made) they contacted me to pay an "ownership fee" that wasn't disclosed in the original contract that i signed. Now I have to pay that money (or a different fee for "own it later", which makes the bike not yours for another 2 years) whether I want it or not, even though the bike has lost most of it's value (the original price was £800 and they still ask for £168 if I want to own it). Do yourself a favor and get a bike 0% finance like Evans cycles to, you will save the same and at least you are ridding your own bike.
Pay deductions with no purchase – beware I applied for a Cyclescheme certificate but never bought a bike. The deductions happened anyway! £150 a month taken out of my pay when I haven't bought anything! Cyclescheme customer service advised me that this is do with my the way my employer works with Cyclescheme. However, this was not communicated during the application process, nor is it mentioned in their FAQs. Very unhappy. Feel defrauded! The fact that this has something to do with the way my company works with Cyclescheme is irrelevant: as a customer I should be presented with all the information required when I apply. Personally, I would not have applied for the certificate if I knew I would be charged before I bought the bike. Now I have to go through a rigmarole with my HR department and Cyclescheme to reclaim my pay.
Look into this carefully before committing.Personally i am dubious about the savings quoted and the end of hire option is rubbish. If i want to own the bike ( which i do otherwise why would i bother?) i have to pay £250 which wipes out most if not all the savings. Going for the £70 payment option means you don't own the bike for a further 3 years after which the bike value will be practically nothing.
Great service! You buy the bike with gross salary so save on tax and NI which is great Really pleased with my bike
Fantastic scheme with huge benefits! I would never have been able to purchase a bicycle without being able to pay monthly via my salary and now I’m on my 3rd bike, 4 years later. It’s always a seamless process with great customer service!
Great experience! I recently got a bike through my employer to help my commute and increase my activity! It just made sense as you get a bike and save £££. I was unsure where to shop for my bike but the local retailers on their homepage guided me from beginning to end. Process is quick and easy and will recommend to friends.
The purchasing part was fine and went smoothly. At the end of the 3 year period I was wanting to hand the bike back and get my £70 deposit returned, the bike is still functioning but is showing the wear of 3 years of daily commute. I was expecting to be able to return it to the bike shop or a local depot as this was a national scheme. No. After having to deal with their frustratingly slow customer service it turns out that if you want that option then you have to get the bike couriered back to their office in Bath, at your own expense. In other words, they don't want the bike back and your £70 deposit is a scam. I imagine if even a small percentage returned their bikes their office would be swamped. I have another bike through cycle2work and that is working out much better. I wouldn't use this company again.
Initially I thought this was a good scheme but my 12th payment was taken out in my may Salary and I asummed as I have had NO contact what so ever from them the final long term hire fee would be taken out of my June salary ....... BUT I just had a letter demanding immediat payment of the £70 or I will have to pay £250 or give the bike back stating they had sent 3 letters already . I can understand 1 going missing in the post but 3 !!!! This is a joke I tried to login in to the website link on the letter for it to say "sorry your not aloud to access this site " so I called to speak to some one and the message on the phone is " this is a test message " what is going on with this company . As a government backed scheme they really need to improve there customer service levels .
My experience of this company is that they never answer emails, and work extremely slowly, if ever. Their lack of customer service not only lets down their customers, but also the bike shops who have to wait an eternity for this terrible and disorganised company to do anything at all. Employers and bike shops should abandon them and use other better organisations
Got a Cyclescheme voucher from my employer to get a bike for my husband, after about 18 months I got a letter to say I had to pay £72 to keep the bike, so technically you don't get it tax free because I paid £368 through my salary and then I had to pay £72 to keep bike. SO ITS NOT TAX FREE BECAUSE U HAVE TO PAY AT THE END ANYWAY !!!
The idea of cycle scheme is great but cyclescheme's idea of customer service is a joke. I was sent an email saying the certificate had been approved and that the certificate would be sent. No certificate arrived after a week. So sent cyclescheme several emails over the next week, none of which they bothered to reply to. Called them up and was lied to saying that because they sent sent the certificate to a yahoo email it wouldn't accept attachments. They hadn't sent the email to yahoo they had sent it to my work email. So clearly they just hadn't attached the certificate and couldnt be bothered to re-send the email with the certificate attached. A very poor company to deal with once they have your money they clearly can't be arsed. Clearly from your response you haven't read my comment properly. You sent the emails to my work email address, this is not yahoo it is gmail. So your lack of attachment argument does not stand up. I don't feel like I have been lied to I know I have! Another lie is to say I only sent 1 email. If you care to look again I sent one on the 2/9/16 to which I got no response and then another on the 6/9/16. So after another 3 days of waiting yes I did call. I have finally received the certificate after much time and effort on my side, so why would I need to call you again? Your attitude sucks and you have confirmed that the cyclescheme customer service is a joke, congratulations.
I purchased my bike through the scheme in April 2013, since then I haven't looked back. I cycle every day where possible, I even do meetings and home visits on my bike now I have more confidence. I have just taken out a second loan to purchase a winter jacket and new lights. Thank you for this opportunity!
I joined the cycle scheme through my employer (Suffolk Coastal District Council) in February and haven't looked back. I'd wanted to get back into cycling for a while, but the costs were just a bit too high. Cycle Scheme allowed me to get a brand new bike that retails at as much as £450, and I only lose £15 a month from my salary thanks to the tax free savings. I never even notice the payments, and with the bike I'm saving a fortune by not driving to work. The scheme has enabled me to get back into cycling and I've never been fitter or healthier. Once I've finished my initial hire period I'm heading straight to the bike shop to pick out my next bike. If you're thinking of getting into cycling but don't think you can afford it, I would definitely recommend cycle scheme. The service is excellent, and there is an excellent Cyclescheme community through the website and social networks to help you on your way once you've got your wheels. What are you waiting for? On yer bike!
I always wanted to try cycling but never had the money to invest in all the gear let alone a bike. With Cyclescheme Ltd I was able to get my first road bike along with some of the safety gear. It has been such a good investment in my health and wellbeing as well as my pocketbook that I have used the scheme twice. Would highly recommend using cyclescheme to anyone wanting to start their own cycling adventure.
I have had two bikes now from cycle scheme and everything has been amazing both times, oh and i plan getting another in November! Also loads of shops to choose your bike from.
The whole experience of picking my gear and then applying for my certificate except for the wait for my company to pay was exciting and fun. I have had 2 bikes now. Cycle every day and love it. Would recommend them and have done to others.
Cyclescheme are incredibly easy to deal with. They are linked to a huge array of cycle vendors throughout the country which makes getting a new bike very straight forward. Although I have not used it yet, the new initiative for safety equipment only only serves to bolster their importance to cycling in the UK. Also, I am saving at least £80 a month on Oyster card fees. It's a no brainer.
I had a rubbish old bike that I'd bought for £35 and was using it to get to work when a colleague said we used cyclescheme. I jumped at it - a new bike, tax free, that comes directly out of my wage. What's not to love? Head out to a cyclescheme bike shop near you, which can be found on their site, and get a quote. Give it back to your employer who will work their magic and you'll get a confirmation email with a code that allows you to collect your bike. I've got fit, improved my mood, improved my productivity at work and use my bike to collect shopping etc (I don't drive) so it's been an absolute life saver. You can also add in clothing, lights and safety equipment if you need it (but I already had my own from my old bike). There's no reason not to do it.
I was interested in getting a new bike to get into work (instead of using the tube) so asked my boss if he would get the company set up with Cyclescheme. I think it took him about 2 emails and one or two forms to fill out, then we were all set. I chose my bike and accessories and signed the relevant documents. My repayments for the bike came out of my pay packet over 12 months and overall I saved about 33% on the cost of the bike and accessories. What's not to like?

Dec 29,2017Do not use this company for cycle to work they are con artists! The process to purchase the bike was reasonable and the salary deduction system was effortless. When i left the company, they took the remainder of my monthly contributions in one lump sum as expected. Today i received a letter demanding payment of £234.17 before the 31st of December (two days away) or i would be "in possession of a bike that does not legally belong to you. Cyclescheme Ltd do reserve the right to take legal action where necessary and may recover from you reasonable legal, administrative and other associated costs." When i tried to contact the customer services i received an automated message telling me they were closed (at midday on a work day). STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!
