I rent cars all over the world and have never had a worse experience. Where do I start? The car was ancient, dirty and covered in scratches and dents. The rear camera regularly failed, subjecting us to annoying warning flashes on the dashboard. The USB plug for the stereo/GPS system was missing, so we couldn't connect our phone. Worst of all the front right tyre had a slow leak which we noticed (thanks to more flashing alarms on the dashboard) about 15 minutes after picking up the car. Fair Car wasn't interested in fixing the problem or giving us another car, so we spent an entire week driving round Iceland on a partially-deflated tyre, constantly looking for petrol stations to pump it back up again. Not cool and not safe during an Iceland winter. No apology, no sympathy, no offer of a discount from Fair Car – just a surly agent grumbling about having to pump up the tire himself.
We booked with Wheego Iceland via Economy Booking. However the offices said -Fair Car / Nordic Car Rental Absolutely shocking, left us at the airport then when they eventually arrived the guy was so rude. Kept insisting that we follow his process and sign for the car despite us wanting to record a massive bump in the car. There was lots of scratches and dents and he wouldn’t let us record them before signing. He left us to find the car in the carpark, which is large, wouldn’t even show us.VERY RUDE staff and cars not up to scratch DO NOT USE. As we wouldn t sign unless we noted the dent on the form he cancelled our booking, now we re left to try and reclaim amounts for Booking agent -Economy Booking - let s see what happens there . Very bad & nasty experience not sure why the company would allow the guy in question to deal with customers!!!
Waited over an hour for the shuttle. We were assured it was running "all the time" but the round trip is no more than 30 minutes. Car was dirty and low on wper fluid with a malfunctioning read wiper. Rear camera so dirty as to be nonfunctional. In Iceland weather these problems directly compromise the safety of drivers. DO NOT RECOMMEND
I booked thru economybookings. I had mentioned my age of 73 and got a quote that was very good. On arriving at the desk of faircar I had to,pay 15 euro a day extra because of my age. I found this gery discriminative. I am an experencied driver. In the little quotes it was mentioned bur I did not read that. But still it is a shame that they ask that and that economybooks is not aware of that rule. After complaining I got an upgrade and the car was ok
SCONSIGLIATISSIMA! Cercate altro.
Azienza totalmente inaffidabile e scorretta. Macchina vecchia. Nessuna assistenza quandi si è rotta. Tutto a nostro carico. Giorni persi. Abbiamo dovuto noleggiare altra auto e pagare notti extra. Nessun rimborso.
The car was really old and went 306,058 KM, when I took it. The sits were dirty and a lot of spots on the seats, like it was never cleaned. The front wiper was making noise and rear wiper´s washer fluid was not working at all. The suspensions were unstable and risky to drive. The fuel tank was not full and one fourth was missing. They did not even check and said to take a picture and tell them while leaving the car at the end of trip. When I left the car, I could not fill it up with the same level of fuel and the service agent did not care and said, they can not do anything about it, "if it is full, then it is full". While taking the car, they did not explained anything and said I need to read all the agreements. While I asked to explain the key points, the service agent did not reply well. They just gave me the key and said the car is outside. They did not even mail the the agreement while taking the car. I had to ask for it while returning the car. They did not explain the insurance but pressed to buy the premium insurance. It seems like the service agent wanted to get rid of the car to me. Only positive things were it was cheap and the engine seems like pretty steady.
Do not book any of __ City Car Rental, Fair Car, Nordic Car Rental, Wheego, Iceland Car Rentals, Right Cars Global Rentals. They are a scam, the above rental car companies are all part of a scam ring. None of them are legitimate businesses registered for operation. Their actual company name is CC bílaleiga ehf. On May 27, 2024, I rented a car online from FairCar Rental Reykjavík, with the rental period from July 8, 2024, to July 18, 2024. According to our agreement, I provided a credit card for a deposit, intending to pay the rental fee upon vehicle pickup. However, contrary to our agreement, the company immediately charged the full rental amount to my credit card on the same day. On July 8, 2024, when I arrived in Reykjavík to pick up the car, I was informed that the reserved vehicle was no longer available. Instead, I was given another car—a very old and worn-out vehicle with over 800,000 kilometers already driven. As a tourist, and considering the company had already charged the full rental amount to my credit card, I had no choice but to accept it reluctantly. On July 14, 2024, while driving from Hvammstangi to Patreksfjörður, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light suddenly illuminated, indicating abnormal tire pressure. Being in a remote area, I couldn't find a repair shop to inspect the tires. The next morning, July 15, 2024, at 8 AM, I immediately sought assistance from a local auto repair shop Bílaverkstæðið Smur og dekk (Car and tire repair) in Patreksfjörður. After inspecting the vehicle, they informed me that all four tires were under-inflated and had leaks. They inflated the tires and I paid for the service before continuing my journey to the next destination. While driving on Highway 615, the TPMS light illuminated again, and the car skidded, hitting a roadside rock. Fortunately, I handled the situation well and avoided a serious accident. I stopped immediately to change to the spare tire, only to realize that there was no spare tire or any tools in the car. Additionally, my phone had no signal to contact the repair shop Bílaverkstæðið Smur og dekk (Car and tire repair) in Patreksfjörður. Therefore, my wife and I walked to a nearby farmhouse to seek help. The farmhouse owner kindly assisted by calling the repair shop to request rescue. On the morning of July 18, 2024, at 7:30 AM, I returned the rental car to the company. The staff at the company made things difficult for me and delayed the process, claiming that the car's wheel rim was damaged and needed assessment. They mentioned that if there was damage, I would be liable for compensation. I questioned them how the car could continue to be driven from the tire blowout on July 15 until the return date of July 18 if the wheel rim was truly damaged and unable to drive. They then changed their statement, saying they would need to involve a third-party assessment which would take two weeks to notify me of the results. They also demanded that I prepay a security deposit via credit card. Due to my flight (SAS SK596) being scheduled for 10:30 AM and the return process being delayed until 8:30 AM, I was extremely anxious about missing my flight. Unfortunately, I had no choice but to comply. However, on the same day, FairCar Rental in breach of the agreement, immediately charged the full security deposit again to my credit card. Afterward, I discovered that this company is actually a scam operation targeting tourists. I hope no one else falls victim to them. Avoid renting from this company at all costs.
We booked a 4x4 with unlimited mileage for our 10-day trip. The check engine light came on on the first day, after we’d driven 5 hours toward the east. Meanwhile, the car was also saying it needed a service in 400km… we’d be driving over 2,500km. We called the emergency line about the check engine light. No answer. Called the next day. They finally answered and said “keep driving if it’s fine unless there’s a real issue.” When someone has rented a 4x4, for driving on F-roads with unlimited mileage, it’s not great to feel that at any moment the engine could go. Incredibly slow and bad service throughout. A bunch of bros who would rather chat than help the next person. Airport pickup is a mess and not very clear where to go. We had to call several times to find the right person to take us to the office. When we did find him, he looked incredibly annoyed at having to do his job. Upon getting to the office, they make you type in all of your details, from license numbers through to addresses — all things you’d already given in your online booking. It slows everything way down and it took over 2 hours from landing to be in our car, despite being through airport security in 20 minutes. Would not rent with them again.
Car ran without missing abeat-clean an took us through some really adverse weather without issue. Friendly staff for the pick-upand when we dropped it back konrad was super efficient. Only issue was when we entered the address when returning we were directed to a nearby vacant section. Maybe the address could be converted to a link so there is no mistake. Think that that is Google's issue
There was no one waiting at Keflavik Airport to meet us (and one other customer a Greek woman). I called the number for Faircar and after waiting for about ten minutes got through to the shuttle bus driver who arrived about 15 minutes later to collect us and take us to the car pick up point about five minutes drive away. We were seen straight away by a member of staff who completed the paperwork formalities very quickly. We did not take the extra insurance which was offered us as I had my own car excess insurance. The staff member did not try to pressurise us into taking extra insurance. We were given an orange Dacia Duster 4WD car with 75,000 kms on the odometer, very clean, undamaged with some very minor stone chips etc which were identified on the condition paperwork. As advised by the member of staff we took photos of the car but found nothing untoward and not already identified on the condition report. The member of staff was friendly gave us some advice on paying for parking and tunnel tolls and recommended a couple of apps to do so. We told the staff member we would be returning the car about half a day early rather than at 4am in the morning of our 7:30am flight. We were told this was no problem at the office was open 24/7 for booked customers. We drove the car around the Iceland ring road covering about 2000 km in 14 days mainly on surfaced roads. On a couple of occasions we had to venture onto gravel roads but not too much. The car performed really well and to our surprise was very economic on diesel. We only needed about 100 litres for our trip. We returned the car at around 6pm on 30th May and the office was shut but a message on the door gave a number to call. After making the call another member of staff arrived about 5 minutes later to check the car back in. This was done quickly and efficiently. There were no damages and the paperwork was completed accordingly. The staff member offered to take us back to our hotel in Keflavik at no charge and of course we accepted! Overall a very good experience with Faircar.
Despite bad reviews I got eazygoing experience with faircar. Reasonably good car for the price. Shuttle on time. Returning car fast and eazy with Robbi and Fribbi. Free coffee.
DO NOT RENT HERE. This company is a complete scam. They charged me over $1500 for “damages” to their poor quality car which was present when I received the car, and I reported to them. Rent from a real car rental company and avoid this scam.
Didnt even finish reservation and already was hit by the classic scam - price on paywall is suddenly higher
I hired a car for 5 days and although I had read the poor reviews, I thought I would give the company the benefit of the doubt - that was a mistake…. To summarise: 1. The car hire company is NOT located on the airport and it took us over a hour to get the minibus transfer and receive the car. The minibus transfer only came following a phone call with the company and no one was waiting for our arrival. 2. The car we received (a Ford SUV) was in a poor state of repair. The wheel alignment was considerably off and the brakes were significantly worn causing considerable vibration under braking. There was also considerable body work damage around the car which we thankfully took pictures of prior to departure from the hire centre. 3. The car had done over 215,000 kms, which in part, explains the poor condition. 4. I tried to get a replacement vehicle the following day due to the damage, but no one answered my emails or returned my phone calls from the hire company. 5. When I returned the vehicle, I complained to the staff about the steering etc, but the staff were completely disinterested in noting the issues. I suspect the next person to rent this vehicle will have the same issues. In summary, a shocking customer service experience and a company that I will not be using again….
We have recently rented a car through FairCar and was really impressed. Like others, I was initially discouraged from using them because of some poor reviews…..My experience couldn’t have been more different….. We were met swiftly from the airport for a 10 minute mini bus ride to their offices. The check out was efficient and the car was a relatively new Dacia Duster which was clean and ready to go. Upon return, the car was promptly checked and we were taken back to the airport to our flight. They didn’t try to hit us with any additional charges or made up damage, which I was nervous about. I can only recommend this company for both an efficient service and by far the cheapest car hire, for a modern 4 wheel drive car, in Iceland.
Very poor service with poorly maintained cars. I hired a Kia with rear view cameras not working, completely invisible rear windscreen, poor wipers for the front windshield etc. Luckily we took pictures of few already existing damages in the car & for our surprise FairCar reported these as damaged caused by us post delivering the car. They never say their office is located few miles out of Keflavík airport while booking the car. Completely unprofessional service. Though they look cheaper while booking but they will try & rip you off wherever they can. Will never ever use faircar again.

Feb 09,2025A FUIR !!!!
