About us The Federation of Master Builders is the largest trade association for the UK construction industry and a not-for-profit organisation that is run by members for members.
Our mission We support small and medium-sized construction companies to grow and manage their business by providing a wide range of support services such as contract templates, unlimited expert advice, online training, and access to a community of fellow professional builders.
Our members must pass an independent inspection and strict vetting process before they join the FMB to ensure they meet the high standards expected of a Master Builder company.
We also connect clients with professional, local builders they can trust through our free Find a Builder service. Our series of ultimate guides for home renovation projects helps clients to understand what to expect during a building project.

May 14,2021Over the years my company has been a member I have found the federation to be an invaluable marketing tool , yes the opportunity of competitive insurance , training seminars, industry updates and access to a legal helpline are good benefits ,but the main attraction is the fact that my company has been independently inspected and I am checked to see I carry the correct insurances This instills confidence in potential clients and whilst the majority of our work comes from referrals , picking up a job from a client you have had no connection with is hard Past new clients have come from various sources , the federations find a builder website , local press coverage from the master builder of the year awards and surprisingly other members who are either too busy ,don't work in the area or don't do domestic extensions . On the odd occasion I have contacted the office I have found staff polite and helpful To summarize for me membership is value for money

May 07,2021I was a established builder and a customer made a compliant that was unjustified at the end of a job we unfortunately had to leave the job as the last few invoices were not being paid. i was paying a membership and felt that the fmb took the side of the customer then went on a witch hunt . shortly after this event i leaft the fmb . over the 5 years of membership i had with them there were no checks or very little correspondence other than taking there fee each year .

Apr 23,2021We were looking for a builder to do an extension on our house and were naive to believe it would be a good thing to have a builder who was a member of FMB. The builder told us the work would take 17 weeks, but after over 40 weeks the builder walked out and refused to come back and complete the extension even though we had a signed contract with him, he also left us over £14,000 out of pocket. We contacted FMB, who we have now found out is only a mediation service the only action taken against the builder by FMB is that they will “monitor the builder but it will be confidential and will not give details of any outcomes”. We provided proof this builder walked out and I thought that FMB would not want a builder like this in their organisation which in turn would give FBM a poor reputation, we wish we were aware of this at the start and would not have been so keen to go with this particular builder.

Apr 06,2021Our builder was a member of the FMB which filled us with trust, however, his membership ended with the completion of our project. We have now become aware of issues with the build and there is no support from the FMB, even though the whole project was done under FMB membership. Why is there no clause to hold builders to account for projects undertaken as members? If they don't want to deal with the mediation they just stop paying membership. As a consumer I have lost trust in the FMB logo - I don't see where it adds any value to a builder's reputation.

Mar 18,2021Recently had a shocking experience with a builder who had recently been excepted into FMB. This just shows that there system for regulating builders who join is wrong. Don't be dragged into thinking FMB will improve your build.
