Find a Builder

About us The Federation of Master Builders is the largest trade association for the UK construction industry and a not-for-profit organisation that is run by members for members.

Our mission We support small and medium-sized construction companies to grow and manage their business by providing a wide range of support services such as contract templates, unlimited expert advice, online training, and access to a community of fellow professional builders.

Our members must pass an independent inspection and strict vetting process before they join the FMB to ensure they meet the high standards expected of a Master Builder company.

We also connect clients with professional, local builders they can trust through our free Find a Builder service. Our series of ultimate guides for home renovation projects helps clients to understand what to expect during a building project.

FMB, in my opinion means nothing. Generally builders are well-known for their cowboy antics, though that is not to tar all of them with the same brush. FMB is meant to vet builders for quality of work and customer care. I say, in my opinion, that it doesn't do enough. In my particular case, the FMB wouldn't help me sanction a builder who had not only done work under guarantee but was within the 6 year statute of limitations for civil cases. It should be a requirement of FMB membership that builders underwrite their guarantees with the Financial Conduct Authority, otherwise their "guarantees" are not worth the paper they are written upon. Don't pay the FMB membership premium for a builder; go by word of mouth and reviews. FMB means nothing, in my opinion. When they do the work, watch them. When they complete the work, look for faults straight away and be extremely pernickety, don't be fobbed off. Catalogue errors (photograph etc.), get a second opinion, withhold payment/minimal payment up-front. Let them threaten to take you to court, turn the tables. FMB weren't much help. Not worth the premium, in my opinion.
