About us The Federation of Master Builders is the largest trade association for the UK construction industry and a not-for-profit organisation that is run by members for members.
Our mission We support small and medium-sized construction companies to grow and manage their business by providing a wide range of support services such as contract templates, unlimited expert advice, online training, and access to a community of fellow professional builders.
Our members must pass an independent inspection and strict vetting process before they join the FMB to ensure they meet the high standards expected of a Master Builder company.
We also connect clients with professional, local builders they can trust through our free Find a Builder service. Our series of ultimate guides for home renovation projects helps clients to understand what to expect during a building project.

Aug 30,2024I must compliment the efficiency of the admin team. Janet processed our membership very quickly and efficiently despite going on annual leave. She handed over our account notes to the FMB team (Chloe) who then finalised our vetting and arranged inspection with one of the assessors very quickly. A big thank you to the team for all their efforts. If there are any companies out there thinking of joining FMB, the process is very easy and the team very helpful.

Jul 29,2024We had an awful experience with the master federation of builders. We were in mediation for about 8 months with our unreasonable builders.The first representative from the federation tried his best for us and got so far unfortunately for us he moved on and we were given another representative who was biased towards the builders.Told us that they had not got the time to read through all our previous correspondence and were not professional in the way we were spoken too and they did not listen. I have a recording of a phone call made by the federation to us and the manner in which I was spoken to was inappropriate.I question how impartial the federation is . I have a transcript of the phone call for anyone who is interested and do not accept this reply. It clearly shows how we were spoken to and this reply shows what the master federation is like .We had a ongoing relationship for eight months with the previous representative who tried is best .

Jul 04,2024I initially thought my next step was the need to join a branded and trusted group (having been a member of The Guild of master craftsmen beforehand) and as such saw this was part of a natural progression and next step to help build my business of which I've been trading in for the last 36years and in that time have a huge amount of knowledge and expertise from the work I produce to a, second to non finish. I do now feel I've not genuinely benefitted with being a member in any way shape or form.

Sep 09,2024The FMB presents itself as an oranisation that guarantees excellence from builders who it endorses. However, we chose a builder on that basis, and have been left with an extension which is having to be knocked down due to serious defects from IMS Builders, who are currently still members of this organisation. When I asked how can this be the case, I was told that there has to be continuous breaches to be expelled. That is like saying that it is OK to commit a crime once, even if it is serious. The FMB are just a profit- making organisation, and I would advise anyone considering a builder to look at previous work and get recommendations from friends and architects. The FMB have been thoroughly discredited in my experience. All the good reviews on here seem to be from builders not clients. Says it all.
