About us The Federation of Master Builders is the largest trade association for the UK construction industry and a not-for-profit organisation that is run by members for members.
Our mission We support small and medium-sized construction companies to grow and manage their business by providing a wide range of support services such as contract templates, unlimited expert advice, online training, and access to a community of fellow professional builders.
Our members must pass an independent inspection and strict vetting process before they join the FMB to ensure they meet the high standards expected of a Master Builder company.
We also connect clients with professional, local builders they can trust through our free Find a Builder service. Our series of ultimate guides for home renovation projects helps clients to understand what to expect during a building project.
Very professional at all times.
Its far to much £££ per yr/month
I think the concept is good, but I don't think FMB do enough marketing to get people onto their platform; we've had 1 genuine job lead in 2 years. The recent change of job tendering is a poor decision - best for clients to read about companies and submit enquiries if serious...sadly if you are on the tools as well as running the business you are unlikely to be able to reply in time. I think the main reason for FMB membership is to show a sign / reliance / good faith of quality work....beyond that I don't currently get much from it.
I used the legal help service with FMB. I received useful advice on dealing with debt owed by an insurance company which was taking a long time to pay out.
All very good and rec asureing
We engaged an FMB affiliated Trade (Dunamis Construction) that can’t be bothered to complete a job, respond to email or even return outstanding Deposit. Quality of work is shoddy, extractor fan stopped working after a while, plasterboard on new bathroom has now caved in, there’s leakages and dampness all along the wall and even tiles broken during fitting wasn’t replaced or fixed. We went for ADR provided by FMB and this seems to emboldens the Trade further and the Trade simply refuse to pay a sum it voluntarily agreed to. And what does FMB say, “we've escalated this internally for investigation and may at our discretion refer to a Standards Committee” so no visibility or transparency or accountability. It’s now left to me to chase this through the Credit Card company or Courts to get my Deposit back and yes to also keep FMB apprised of any further steps I’m taking to recover my money.
They need to rethink how they market themselves as even after all this time many end users are still unaware of the FMB and what they offer against other suchlike building and construction platforms.
Similar poor experience to many others. Picked a contractor who was FMB registered, in the hope that this would be an assurance of quality. Quite the opposite. Expensive price, poor quality and contractor abandoned the job. Used the dispute resolution service. This is outsourced and toothless. Just hide behind emails and excuses. They never visited site to inspect the work, so are in a weak position to challenge anything the contractor says. Near non-existent communication. I am having to chase (the dispute resolution team) all the time for progress of the dispute resolution, only to get..”I have sent them another email and I am awaiting their response……I have left a voicemail and I am awaiting their response.” If they haven’t responded to my emails or calls in seven months, why do you think they will respond to you? After four months contractor resigned from FMB, who advise …”there is nothing more we can do..” They suggest I “might want to engage a lawyer and a RICS surveyor”. ……. , as if I have a limitless bag of money I can throw at this. As others have said, seems to protect members, not consumers. Contractors pay a fee to use the FMB logo in the hope that customers will be fooled into thinking this will give them a quality product. I am thousands of pounds out of pocket thanks to an FMB registered contractor ripping me off and walking away. It will cost me thousands to get someone else to fix the mess. The only thing FMB are quick to do is point out they offer no compensation if you are shafted by one of their members. I am sure the FMB will respond saying….”To become a member of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), builders are required to pass an independent inspection of their work. The inspections are carried out by the BBA or RISA who are the UK’s leading construction certification bodies. Members must also pass a professional vetting process which includes a check of their trading history, credit history and proof of insurance. We then continue to monitor our members on an ongoing basis. Less than 1% of the projects our members carry out ever result in a complaint, and even where they do, we are successful in reaching a satisfactory outcome through mediation in most cases. Therefore, we are confident that FMB membership is a mark that consumers can trust when looking for a quality builder. The FMB reviews any concerns that a consumer raises in line with the FMB Code of Conduct. We monitor all of our members by considering their membership as a whole, which will normally include work on several projects over the course of a year. We do take action where members have persistently or seriously failed to abide by our Code of Conduct and apply sanctions up to and including expulsion from membership where this is warranted. Our internal monitoring process is confidential, and we are unable to give you details on any outcomes.
Really good service, friendly and helpful staff members. Easy to speak to FMB on the phone without any long waiting times.
Great support and services, very professional approach towards assisting with every aspect of your enquiry. I am glad the like of FMB exist to ensure construction industry and the project outcomes are regulated and enhanced.
Very professional highly recommended great organisation , Tommy director of Temple Leadworks Ltd
I've no idea why you sent this question about my 'experience'. Why ask for a review without telling me what I'm reviewing? I'm in touch with the FMB at least once a week, so please explain what you want to be reviewed.
Overall great experience.
Great to be member of FMB!!!
Required advice have not received over 7 months ago
I can't recommend the FMB highly enough.A breakdown of communication with our builder could have led use going down the legal route, something we wanted to avoid. However, we sought arbitration through the FSB and after two years, it appears we have a solution to the problem. Jack was knowledgeable, efficient and fair. An excellent experience.
FMB has been invaluable to my company and I could not do all the things that I have wanted without them. Wining contracts is much easier and generating leads are also much easier.
From the outset, I had a very good experience. Everything was explained and the process was simple.
The FMB acted as a mediator between us and our loft conversion contractor, following a dispute in relation to a build error and poor quality of service we received. They were influential in helping us obtain a compensation settlement, without the need for expensive legal representation.
