Rhode Island Student Loan Authority (RISLA) is a non-profit quasi-state authority that has been providing lower-cost higher education financing solutions since 1981 and free college planning services since 1998. Also provided by RISLA is RIScholarships.org, a free online scholarship search tool to help match students with local scholarships. Additionally, RISLA also offers the Knowledge for College Scholarship, which awards 50 students $2,000 each to help pay for college expenses. For students trying to reduce their interest rates on existing student loans, RISLA also offers low-cost student loan refinancing options. RISLA is with you every step of your college journey, walking you through the college planning process, educating families on obtaining financial aid, and providing tools and resources that help families make informed and responsible borrowing choices to help pay for education.

The process for getting my loans refinanced was extremely drawn out. Instead of reaching out and requesting all the additional paperwork needed at once, I would upload a document, then later receive another request for a different document. This happened at least 3-4 times. Some of the paperwork, I would need to request from my current and/or past providers, which it could take up to 10+ days to hear back from them, as well. This was extremely annoying. While it did take a while of going back and forth, I was able to get approved and it has been smooth sailing since (so far, I just received my first bill). The person I spoke to on the phone was also very nice.

For starters - when I called before 9am with a query/issue on my application, I left a voicemail for a person - not an answering service. That person was Abe. He was AMAZING. He called back within 5-minutes of my voicemail and spent 45~min on the phone with me to ensure that I had all the correct documents uploaded, information was corrected in your system, etc. so my application would move that little bit quicker (since refinancing / student loans are a headache, by nature). The process was smooth, clearly documented / trackable in your system, and I felt at ease through the whole process. Now, I'm just awaiting the freedom from my current loan provider and look forward to having a fixed interest rate for a 5-year loan; the end is in sight, officially!

It was not clear cut sometimes (or intuitive) as to how to upload documents. Drop down menu did not include what we needed. Seems oriented toward working, not retired co-signers.

Refinancing my son's loan was a fairly easy process. I'm not thrilled about sending my personal docs electronically but the directives were easy to understand. It would have been nice to speak to an individual to personalize the process but today's world is not about that!

I am very pleased with how helpful and personable the RISLA staff was with each phone call I made. They went above and beyond to help guide me every step of the loan application process with genuine concern and care. The loan application process was easy and the communication along the way regarding "next steps" was simple to understand and more importantly, timely. Having the option to back out of the loan prior to final approval was reassuring in that I knew I could cancel due to any hesitance. (There was none and we proceeded full steam ahead).

We were in the market to refinance our parent student loan due to all of the recent interest rate hikes. RISLA was extremely competitive with fixed rates and the application process online was easy to follow. All necessary documents could be uploaded and the loan was approved quickly. You can check the status of the loan anytime online. Email contacts with customer service were answered promptly. Overall, it as a great experience.
