Alexandria’s mission is to make libraries as important today as they were 40 years ago. Libraries are not “dead” and will never be. Our goal is to give librarians the tools to share and promote their resources. The first version of Alexandria was released in 1990. Alexandria itself has continued to be updated and enhanced for over 20 years, which is pretty amazing in the technology and software industry.

Some of the searches do not work. Titles and advanced searches with authors simply do not show up, even though they are in our library. We also do not seem to have the ability to curriculum code search any more.

From the sales department, to Tech support, to my personal customer representative, I have been highly impressed with Alexandria. The system itself is user friendly and just makes sense. I had to contact tech support over the weekend, and received a helpful response from the company's owner within 10 minutes! They seem to be always available and incredibly helpful.

I would have highly recommended Alexandria UNTIL they went to version 7. It is a mess now, with lots of bugs that they don't seem to be able to fix. This software reminds me of the old companion corporation software. The libraries became their testers and then they worked out the bugs. We waited several months, hoping the transition would be a smooth one. Everytime I call about a bug, they tell me they have fixed it only to find when they get into my database that it is not fixed. Very frustrating. I wouldn't recommend Alexandria, version 7 to anyone. It's not user friendly and everything now takes many more steps. Up until this version, I would have recommended the program to anyone who wanted a user-friendly library program.

We upgraded to version 7 last winter. The librarian side of the system didn't change very much. The changes on the patron side changed a lot and truthfully not for the better. There are many searches users could previously do that are no longer available. I'm hoping improvements continue on a timely basis. Suzette Kragenbrink

Great program, easy to use, but there are some little problems. Like being able to change a password not being on the help menu.

My school, as well as the other schools in my district, run hosted Alexandria in our libraries. The hosting services Alex offers is fantastic. Having someone else in charge of updates, backups and any other issues that may come up, provides us all a tremendous peace of mind. Alexandria offers a wide variety of reporting options, their OPAC interface, including their younger Scout version, is very user friendly and the Alex support team is patient and thorough. I appreciate and find very helpful, the Alexandria community of users list-serve as well as the Alexandria monthly newsletters. The topics covered in the newsletters are timely and insightful and my fellow Alex users offer a wealth of knowledge and experience first hand from the field.

I need more detailed reports then what I am able to get on Alexandria. I want to be able to get a monthly circulation and have it detailed out by cat on one report but as it is I have to go in and print multiply reports in order to do this. I like to see if what is checked out is children's, fiction, nonfiction, dvd, mag, etc... and not able to do this all in one report.

The Alexandria system works fine for checking books in and out and the Researcher helps students find books. I do have to hunt around when I want to run reports. At present, I am weeding my collection. I have the reply (and they are quick to respond to email questions) about how to discard books from last spring. I do not know if the system has been updated so those directions do not apply. When I click on the help button, I go to the web site that I find very hard to navigate. Even when I searched for "discarding books" I went to a page that I think was maybe a blog. It did say to look under Circulation, Discard Mode that I tried last year. So I don't know if I want discard mode or weeding mode. The system does read all the different barcodes in the library and it has many, many features that I am not using. Overall it is a good system for my small library.

An easy, well organized program. If there is ever a problem or question, one phone call and you have the answer!

We started using Alexandria in 1998 when we needed to back up everything to flash drives. Last year we moved to the hosted version and have been completely happy with it. And as far as the daily functions of the program, it is extremely user friendly. I would call it streamlined compared to the other automation programs I've had my hands on.

When we change years or upgrade systems we have trouble making everything work. It takes several attempts before it is all working. We have to contact our tech guys to contact your tech guys and becomes a long process.

Our library switched from a very frustrating system to Alexandria. While there is always a learning curve, once we have everything in place it makes our jobs so much easier. The help function is amazing and the extra features like book reviews and the bulletin boards are extremely helpful for our college. We are very happy with Alexandria
