Alexandria’s mission is to make libraries as important today as they were 40 years ago. Libraries are not “dead” and will never be. Our goal is to give librarians the tools to share and promote their resources. The first version of Alexandria was released in 1990. Alexandria itself has continued to be updated and enhanced for over 20 years, which is pretty amazing in the technology and software industry.
I am still finding out new things. I haven't tried any other library software so I can't compare it. Listening to others who have had different library software this is the one to get.
Overall I think that Alexandria is a pretty easy and straight forward to use as far as basic circulation. But running reports feels like a guessing game and often I can't easily locate the kind of report I am looking for. I feel like the reports I need are fairly basic informational reports but because we have 3 campuses all on the same site it makes it difficult.
Not only is the software easy to use, but their customer service is exemplary (in a world where this no longer exists) you can depend on them to not only answer the phone but to answer your problem or question.
I have been using Alexandria for several years, and I enjoyed the new features available in my upgrade to version 7 (from v. 5) last year. Being able to access the software over the Internet is wonderful and streamlines adding catalog-search computers. I feel like most of the menus and features are intuitive, and I love that the software searches for pictures of items in our collection on its own in the background. I look organized, and the students love being able to see cover art in their searches! However, I had some trouble with the software last year, and though tech support were kind and helpful, some of the software's functionality is still not restored. I wish that documentation for do-it-yourself licensees were more basic and easy for amateurs to use. I understand that hosting on the cloud is easier for Companion Corp., but my budget won't allow for that.
Called Customer Service today & got great help!
You need to have a lot of time to figure out the software, normally in a school library you don't have that time. All of our tech savvy librarians seem to use it with more ease.
As a user of Alexandria for the past 20 years, I can honestly say that I have had very few problems or frustrations with the software system. I am an extremely busy elementary librarian circulating several hundred books a day. This program is a workhorse and keeps up with this hectic pace. The interface for students is very easy for them to navigate and locate the books/materials they need. The program is also user-friendly for its main user - me. I love the ease of creating booklists for teachers, printing overdue notices and fines, printing barcodes and spine labels for our books, and even completing end-of-the-year inventory. A few years ago, there was a possibility that our district was going to go with a different company to unify the secondary schools with the elementary. The elementary librarians fought for and won (wow!) the fight to keep Alexandria at the elementary level! That's how much we love this program!
Coming to this program as a new library technician with very little experience I was able to grasp the system with some trial and error. I do like the tips and tricks emails that Alexandria has recently begun sending. I find they address some common issues. However, the instruction manual wasn't comprehensive and I eventually gave up trying to use it.
I love Alexandria but I do think that the help section while extensive could be more user friendly. Not all of the prompts and commands are intuitive and at times I felt like I've been give instructions but not how to get to the location to start the instructions. I like the ease of checking books in and out and the record keeping. I like the options I get with the program but still unsure how to use it. My school is small so I hope you keep the many levels of intricacies as to keep our small library system simple. Thanks
We have always been very happy with Alexandria, and have had very few problems through the years. Our library was in the first wave of Alexandria users when the company started up in Wisconsin--have never really considered switching since we found them!
I have found Alexandria software to be user friendly with great technical support. Everything I need to catalog my library is at my fingertips and can be found quickly and easily.
This is an easy to use program. The customer service is also awesome! When I call, they are always friendly, and willing to help. If they can't answer the question immediately, they will get back to you very quickly! Love Alexandria!
I've had a great experience with Alexandria Automation Software so far. I'm sure that there are features that I haven't yet used, but am confident that as I continue to use the system, I'll be more knowledgeable about the full scope of capabilities. Thanks!
Alexandria is a little rough around the edges but for the price it can't be beat. It gives the librarian all of the tools needed to manage the library (along with circ, patrons and items, there are lots of reports and utilities). I've been very happy with tech support- they respond quickly and clearly.
Love Alexandria. Powerful for the librarian and kid friendly on all levels!
I have experience with 4 different Library Automation platforms. Alexandria is my favorite in terms of ease of use, ability to tailor to specific library needs, and the ability to tailor reports. I have had wonderful experience with their support crew whenever I needed any type of help. Just a great company and product.
The software is relatively easy to use and very affordable. We have no problems training new users to run the library side of things or to use the software as a patron. We do not use all of the features - like Explore - and we do not use any of the paid add-ons. We used to subscribe to Sneak Peek, which I thought was great, but students did not ever use it. Support, when I've needed it, has been very responsive and friendly. I think there was only one time in my 11 years using Alexandria where we couldn't fully solve the problem without a workaround. I was satisfied with the workaround, so I considered it solved. As an administrator, it is easy to import and export demographic information (though having to figure out what the column heading numbers should be can be frustrating - please let us use column heading text). Importing MARC records and student photos is a breeze, too. The reports could be more flexible. There is information on reports that we don't need, and we can't get rid of. For example, we don't charge fines, so that should never be on a patron report. There is information we would like on reports, but is not available on all of the reports, so we sometimes have to run more than one report and cross-reference. I would also like to be able to export a report into a format other than PDF or COMPedit format. A .csv file would be very helpful, especially when needing to pull data from two reports. Being able to customize what actually shows on reports, and being able to export report data for use in a spreadsheet would make this review 5 stars. Alexandria is definitely an appreciated value in this school district.
Reports are easy to generate and extremely useful. Online service is fast and very rarely goes down.
I really would like to have a manual. not everyone learns on the computer. we have a really small school and it takes more time to figure out a lot of the stuff by trial and error or going to your web site. instead of the old way just looking it up in the manual.

Oct 14,2016I've been using Alexandria Library Automation Software for almost 15 years. The software is excellent and provides for many different reports that help me oversee our middle and high school libraries. The software has many functions and options to personalize your libraries. The support staff is excellent and has always helped me until my problem was resolved. I totally recommend Alexandria Library!
