Hi, A a big thankyou to Mark Banthorpe at Coban Guitars for helping me out on my Telecaster build. My kit had a white pick guard and I needed a black one. Mark helped me out by allowing me to swap my unused white pick guard, and he sent me a brand new black one by return post. A big thankyou to Mark and Coban Guitars for their help.
I'm building my guitar at the moment but already the quality of the product is clear and obvious. The service I received from Mark on WhatsApp has been faultless. He kept me up to date with shipping and answered a range of my questions prior to order with patience and expertise.
Very quick service. I used the chat service to order a tremolo bridge and that was very good. Quick and efficient. Obviously someone who knew the products on the other end.
delivered quick, excellent quality product
Brilliant kit. Everything fits, soldering/electrics all work (although instructions could be a bit better and march the wiring colours). Would thoroughly recommend
Prompt efficient service. Kit arrived in good order. Looking forward to putting it together.
Great customer service, products arrived in good time and in perfect condition. Quality of the product is ready to start finishing and assembly.
Fantastic Quick delivery.. When I emailed to request a larger sample for test staining - I received a lovely piece of veneer (quickly..)
This Shop is by far then best Guitar shop I ever bought from. Impeccable customer service I will buy from these guys again, no doubt about it My go to guitar DIY kit store
I have not yet started the build but on first inspection the kit looks good quality and complete in all detail for the reasonable price, and it was delivered quite quickly. It includes a couple of features that I was not expecting like the nicely grained hardwood main body and nice cream banding between the top face. I will take my time with this one and I expect a good looking result.
Mark was exceptionally helpful he helped me through many issues and made some great suggestions to fix them, he then went the extra mile to help me afterwards with a payment issue. Very happy with the service will recommend to others. Thanks mark
I researched guitar kits for some time before deciding on Coban. I then corresponded with Mark, who was very prompt with helpful advice and photographs of stock SG5M kits for me to chose from. I ordered the exact kit I wanted late on a Tuesday, it arrived on the Thursday. I’m hopeless at DIY, but I easily shaped the headstock with a junior hacksaw and sandpaper, applied nine coats of TruCoat to the body and the back of the neck/headstock (with 24 hours and a rubbing with wire wool between each coat), and masked and sprayed the front of the headstock with 10 coats of Halfords gloss black (with a sanding at coat #5). I applied a Mother of Pearl style ‘brand name’ and crown transfer to the headstock, and then fitted the hardware. I lost one of the tuner washers, but I contacted Mark and he posted one to me free of charge without question or hesitation. The tuners work well, the fretboard (which I treated with lemon oil) is a joy to play, and the bridge, stop-tail, selector switch, pick ups, jack socket and pots all work and went in easily. The supplied instructions were very basic, but there are plenty of DIY guides on YouTube. The wiring diagram was pointless, but even with my limited knowledge and abilities it was obvious that the pots with green capacitors were the tone pots, meaning that the other two were the volume pots. On my SG5M the selector switch hole was much too close to the volume knobs, so I left the rhythm and treble ‘poker chip’ off. The strings were loose in the packaging, so you have to work out which is which. They were also of exceptionally low quality, the low 'E' wouldn't intonate, so don't bother working them out and just buy a replacement set of decent strings like I had to. The guitar plays nicely, and didn’t really need a ‘set up' other than the intonation. It sounds unbelievably good, with a genuine and powerful range of SG sounds. Yes, I could have bought a used Epiphone SG or a Harley Benton for less than the cost of the SG5M, but it wouldn’t have had an ebony fretboard, might not have played or sounded as good, and I wouldn’t have had the satisfaction of assembling it myself. I’ll add a photo of my SG5M as my profile picture, and there are several others in the Coban website gallery.
Absolutely gobsmacked at the quality. Expected basswood back and sides, got maple; bonus. The top is glorious. Some minor blemishes in the glue-ups and a bit of woodswarf in the neck pocket, but you don't buy a kit if you can't make a silk purse out of a silk purse. So impressed, and will be back for more. My single disappointment; the fitting of the nut. It's a lovely bit of bone, but it appears to have been stuck down with some naff epoxy on the bottom. This is problematic for all sort of reasons, most of them having nothing to do with the excellent quality of your product. The nut came off with some gentle pressure, and it needed to, because it wasn't correctly aligned with the fingerboard. That it was adhered to the neck with a lake of brittle plastic did it no favours. A well-fit nut requires no more than two tiny dabs of CA glue on the face that meets the endgrain of the fingerboard. This means that anybody coming along afterwards and looking to repair or modify the spec doesn't have to contend with re-finding a flat surface. It has the added bonus of being considerably cheaper, easier, and more efficient. A tiny gripe in the grand scheme of excellence, but one worth attention, from many and varied perspectives, including customer service, efficiency and cost. Wonderful products.
Having decided to build a Telecaster type kit I did my due diligence and decided that Coban seemed to offer the best value. Not the cheapest but looking at YouTube and reading the reviews it seemed the best quality for my budget. Using the WhatsApp button on the website was a great way of getting more details from the always helpful Mark. He even sent me actual photo's of a couple of models. I went with the quilted maple thinline in the end. Fast delivery. Ordered Monday evening arrived safely on Wednesday. Unboxed it and everything looks good. Neck fits body very snugly and no obvious dings or scratches on the woods. Thanks, Mark. Phil
Brilliant service and a good looking guitar kit.
Excellent service, delivery and return first class.
Guitar kit arrived very soon after ordering. Everything looks to be if a high quality and I shall enjoy building it.
I received a Les Paul style kit from Coban recently. The kit itself is very well machined, and the (set) neck joint fits like a glove. The mahogany body is beautiful and the spalted maple veneer, while very thin (as other reviewers have commented) is absolutely stunning. The guitar neck is a joy, 100% flat and requiring only minimal work to level, crown and polish the frets and dress fret ends. What has impressed me most is the amazing customer service from Coban. Mark has been incredibly responsive and could not have been more helpful. I have contacted Coban several times regarding the sizes of hardware, as I wanted to upgrade various components (probably not strictly necessary as the supplied bridge, tailpiece and tuning machines are all pretty good quality!) and my guitar was a Christmas gift I wouldn’t receive until 25/12. Mark measured parts himself so I could buy my upgrades before I received the guitar. Mark also very kindly sent me a spare piece of veneer when I stupidly damaged the guitar top! This level of customer service is almost unheard of these days. Simply outstanding! All in all, this is a great fun project for anyone with some basic tools and a reasonable amount of patience. Like anything, you get out what you put in and this top notch, reasonably priced kit will potentially make a cracking guitar. I love it.
So far so good. Ordering pretty straight forward. Looking forward to getting my hands on the goods to start creating my ”own” guitar.
