I’ve been a pro musician all my adult life, had some lovely guitars, so I know what feels and sounds good in my hands, since the lockdown what with lack of gigs, decided to actually build one, found out about Coban kits on Facebook, and fancied the look of the Les Paul with spalted veneer with a bolt on neck, to be honest I thought it would turn out to be average ,not because of what it looks like , but me making a pigs ear out of it , but with the god instructions it came with, and looking at YouTube clips and forums for help I ended with a guitar that looks and sounds as sweet as some of the Les Pauls you can buy in a shop for nearly a tenth of the price, a great Axe.

Ordered a left hand explorer guitar kit. Am just in the process of building it and the quality is great. Nice tight neck joint, straight true neck and the fret board feels good enough to play on with no dressing. I have grain filled the mahogany body and neck, sanded then used a mahogany wood dye to bring out the form. I am finishing it with tru oil. My only complaint is they have only have limited kits for lefties.

Great quality spalted Maple PRS style kit. Excellent woods, and although I upgraded some of the hardware, the supplied pickups & pots sound great. The finished guitar honestly ranks equal with my actual PRSs. A very enjoyable "lockdown" project. Recommend 100%

Good work but poor on details. The veneer is a bit damaged and the frets are not leveled. Took a bit of time to get it right.

The guitar kit arrived in days and have to say the quality is the best I've seen on a kit. Ordered the ash Stratocaster and it's beautiful. where else can you get a full ash body, beautiful maple neck with ebony fretboard. Three awesome woods at a great price!. Very impressed and will definitely be getting another.

I've played the guitar on and off for over 20 years now, but this is the first time I've ever tried to put a kit together. I thought it would be a fun project to keep me busy during lockdown. I went for the PR830 Spalted Maple kit, with a set-in neck. It arrived quickly and securely packaged, and on first inspection I was immediately pleased with the quality of the neck and body. I was expecting it to look and feel a lot cheaper, but even straight out of the box it feels, and looks like some substantial wood. I'd watched many kit videos on youtube prior to ordering so had some idea of how to start, and what additional equipment I would need to finish the job. I would advise anyone starting a kit for the first time to do a little research first, and just make sure they have any additional tools/supplies they may want before they start. Out of the box, the neck profile was surprisingly good. I've played Ibanez guitars for many years now and am used to their thinness, and was expecting this to feel like a baseball bat, but it's surprisingly comfortable. I've sanded the neck down a little regardless, and after a few coats of Tru-oil I'm extremely happy with how it feels. Assembling and finishing the rest of the guitar was great fun, and I had no issues installing any of the components. I found the neck was very well cut, and gluing it together was actually a very smooth process, which was the biggest thing I was worried about. I had one issue once everything was assembled with getting the pickups to work, but after investigating for a couple of hours I gave up and messaged Coban directly for some ideas. They got back to me within the hour with a solution (turns out I'd knocked a wire during the final installation, whoops!), which is the sort of customer service you can't complain about! I'm extremely happy with the end result, and actually currently prefer it to my Ibanez RGRT420, and I'm already mentally working out what to do with the next build.

Guitar kit with very precise body-to-neck connection. Fretboard needs work, but that's why you buy a DIY kit. Body Looks very nice. Didn't already build it but looking forward to. Quick and good delivery. Very quick Personal answer to a question.

In 42 years of playing guitar I never thought about building a kit, which I've been aware of the last decade or so. A Spalted Maple PRS type kit took my fancy and after perusing the internet on comments and tips about these kits I took the plunge. I'm not bad at DIY my other hobby is Plastic kits, my wife commented 'only you could combine two hobbies in one!' The kit arrived next day after dispatch, previously Mark sent photo's of three tops he had in stock so picked one of them, a nice touch. That day I shaped the top of the head of the neck, all the kits headstocks are blank, and after a test fit, superb fitting, I glued the neck in with Titebond III. Clamped for 3 hours then let dry for 24. I fitted out the rest of the kit, you get EVEYTHING, all the holes are pre-drilled and were all pretty accurate. The is nut VERY high as glued by the factory, it needed a fair bit of trimming down. The fretboard had a few very fine splits in it which caused some raising of the grain but was soon sorted with a polish with some fine steel wool, as were the frets themselves. I should mention, I checked the scale length measurement before gluing the neck in, which was fine, but I read somewhere it's best to not trust the setting of the neck is correct from the factory. The only other issue I found was the Bridge post inserts pushed into the holes too easily by hand, you should have to tap them in really, so I used some Gorilla Glue to secure them. Everything worked OK apart from the neck pick-up push-in joint to the switch was dodgy, quickly remedied by soldering straight to the pot. It takes some time to set up a guitar from scratch and I feel some people may find this the hard part, especially the nut, but you can always put it in to a luthier to sort out but that's not the point of these really. I think a Brass, adjustable nut with shims would be better. There are no high points on the fret-work as far as I can tell and the neck feels wonderful, not too big and not too small in the hand. The pick-ups are powerful and the tone and volume controls surprisingly well, the tone in particular rolling off the highs gradually, not all in the last 10th of a turn as usual in cheap pots! I wouldn't even consider changing the pickups were it not for the fact that they are two-wire type, not four, so you can't split them. Acoustically the guitar I feel is quite loud and bright but this is all subjective, for instance I prefer the sound of worn in strings, not nice new ones! Overall, very impressed, Mark answered my E-mail re: the selector switch within an hour or so, and that was on a Sunday! Promised to send a new one the next day if I couldn't get it going but all's well as mentioned earlier. Even if I don't gig I'll replace it with a more robust one sometime. The only real downside? the tuners are bad, even for cheap tuners. Maybe a couple are quite smooth, a couple are notchy and the other two seem very slack in use. I'll replace these with locking ones anyway in due course, Wilkinson ones getting good reviews. Overall very pleased with this first attempt and will definitely will buy another in the future.
