Aug 21,2024First of all, this is a brilliant scheme; there’s no way I’d be able to afford an e-bike without it and it enables me to ride to work - there’s no way I could do the 15 miles each way without electric assistance! Took a while to get my head around the practicality of how things worked and maybe the instructions could be clearer - but that might just be me. My only real issue was timing; you have to find a bike (and price) in order to submit your application. My first application had to be cancelled because by the time it was approved, the frame size had sold out and I had to start the whole process again. I found another one then had an agonising wait for around a week before I could confirm my order - whilst my application was approved by my company, the money transferred and my certificate issued. So I eventually got the bike I wanted at a great price (hence the 4 stars…), but it was a bit of a faff (…and not 5). Ideally it would be nice to be able to secure/reserve a selected bike whilst your application is going through - but not sure how that would be possible. Maybe we just have to accept it’s what we have to do to pay less?

Aug 21,2024Depending on your employer you can spend up to 10K on the bike and equipment which is a big saving if you pay higher rate tax. The cyclescheme bit is pretty streamlined but your employer will often need a nudge to do the paperwork so do that if things get stuck.

Aug 16,2024I've been to 3 cycle shops in London, all of which charge an extra 10% in cash on top of the full recommended retail price when paying with a cyclescheme voucher. Buying a discounted bike is virtually impossible. The tax benefit is quickly wiped out by the commission charged by the various cycle to work schemes.

Aug 14,2024Great to save some money but a long wait for the voucher (they send them only once a month, so it depends) and you need to physically be in the shop to order it :( long wait for the bike (Someone has to approve the cycle scheme or check smth)

I got a rapid response to a couple of questions and it was also very easy to find information on the website. Retailers that I talked to were very familiar with the operation of the scheme and, once a certificate number was allocated, the rest was rapid and painless.

Aug 12,2024I signed up for this scheme on the incorrect assumption i would be able to get a bike from Halfords, who must be one of the biggest retailers of bikes in the UK. I specifically wanted a Boardman bike and applied for the budget for this. When i got my funding approved and went to order my bike i found out Halfords are not on the list and only selected online retailers and local shops were available. These are more expensive and did not have the bike i wanted so i was discappointed with this service and had to compromise.
