Volunteered for 3 weeks, in the Thailand elephant and wildlife sanctuary - honestly the best 3 weeks of my life! 1 week with the primates and other rescued animals - cleaning enclosures, preparing food and enrichments, topping up water. 2 weeks working with the elephants which was by far the best part of the trip. Preparing fruit, making banana balls, washing the elephants, preparing enrichments and taking the elephants for walks. I learnt the value of working together as a team, and good leadership, as I was team leader for the Elephants Pai Lin and Boon Mee about 6 times! I also lead 2 of the tourist walks with Boon Mee when the centres tour guides were really busy, putting me in charge of the safety briefing, teaching the tourists how to behave and feed an elephant whilst telling them about the sanctuary and answering their questions. My favourite experience was when I was taking the elephant Pai Lin for a walk and she decided to go for a swim in the lake because it was such a hot day - I have never seen such a happy elephant! Despite travelling by myself, I made so many friends there especially in the evenings which were so sociable, for example doing house duty and doggy duty which helped you get to know so many more people. It was an amazing experience, one which I will never forget!
We had a fabulous 2 weeks at the Elephant sanctuary in Thailand It has got to be the best experience I've ever had,it took a while to adjust to life at the sanctuary,it was hard work but so rewarding,to think that you are helping these magnificent animals after they have endured so much If your looking for home comforts, this may not be for you
I really in joyed my time on both projects elephant park and conservation project in South Africa in 2014 from Jessica burgham
I spent a month in South Africa volunteering with elephants and it was probably the best experience of my life. I am grateful for Oyster because I was able to find the place that I went to through them, but whilst I was in South Africa I learned that when you book through Oyster they charge a 40% increase than if I had booked straight through the elephant organization. I do not think that Oyster did any more for me than if I had book straight through. I know that Oyster still needs to make money but I feel that a 40% increase is more than unreasonable.
My experience with Oyster Worldwide was in general a very good one! I received a lot of documents with loads of useful information. And Harriet was a very pleasant person to deal with. Apart from that, I had the impression that the communication between Oyster and Lionsrock is not the best. Already at the beginning, I told Oyster that there were discrepancies between the information from Oyster and that from Lionsrock (regarding accomodation, food, and so on). Also, in regards to the volunteer's tasks, I was never told that I would have to look after two dogs that were living in the volunteer's accomodation. All of these are just minor flaws, not only because those 2 dogs were just so adorable, and I miss them (and a lot of other things from Lionsrock!) dearly! Lionsrock to me was such an awesome experience, I hardly find the words to describe. And Oyster made that possible for me, so I owe them. But most of my gratitude is owed to Lionsrock; the place itself, the people and, last but absolutely not least, the wonderful animals. Lionsrock will forever have a special place in my heart.
Oyster strikes the perfect balance between being a support system and allowing volunteers to be independent. Throughout my experience i gained the confidence to do things on my own and navigate a place/culture I had previously known little about, all the while knowing that if anything went truly wrong I had an office full of people, who felt like family, that were ready to help me no matter the time or weather. The only reason I hesitated to give this a five start rating is that I know an experience like this isnt for everyone, and it is not an easy experience to have. Settling with the host families is not always smooth sailing, and working with the AMAZING kids can also be incredibly frustrating. I felt incredibly lucky to have the Oyster team and friends I made in Nepal to help me navigate life in such an overwhelming and incredibly beautiful (nature and people) place.
A fantastic company which helped create and manage a 6 month ski season for me. They were always helpful and efficient. I would recommend anyone thinking of doing a gap year to choose them.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience working with Oyster worldwide. Every part of my trip was well organised and instructions were very clear. Every day instructions were given for the day ahead. Representatives of the company were very helpful and responses are always prompt. The projects are genuine and i would have no hesitation to work with Oyster worldwide on another project or even re-visit the last.
Oyster helped with every step of the way when planning my trip to South Africa, they made sure I had all of the supplies needed at the reserve, i'm very glad I chose Oyster. I cant wait to plan another trip!
I volunteered in Australia for a month in April and May 2017. The experiences I had on the project were incredible, Ihad a brilliant time with the fellow international volunteers and the team leaders were all very nice. I split my time between the Sydney office and Brisbane office. Personal highlights included staying in a farmhouse for a week near Gold Coast and Koala tracking in the Napean dam. The reason this review is not 5 stars is because of the service I recieved from Oyster worldwide. Despite being friendly the communication between Oyster worldwide and CVA (the organisation in Australia) was inadequate to the point of being completely inept. A miscommunication lead to me arriving at the wrong office and therefore losing out on a day of Volunteer work. After arriving in Australia all of my problems were very quickly rectified by making a few calls directly to CVA. CVA were also very flexible in adding an extra week to my programme and facilitating a transfer up to Brisbane. Overall I would 100% reccommend volunteering with CVA in Australia. I would not however reccomend booking through Oyster, as direct communication with CVA would have made the process much simpler.
The support you receive is great. There is no denying that you could do a lot of what they provide on your own but having the support and the security that I would be moving countries and didn't have to worry about finding a job, a place to live or navigating myself somewhere I'd never been before made it all worth it. Especially finding out when I got here that there was housing crisis! It's great to have help both abroad and back home. I'd recommend Oyster for your first travel experience abroad wholeheartedly.
At first I was apprehensive about spending a large sum of money with Oyster Worldwide in order to take part in a ski instructor programme in Canada. However, the support and information provided by the company was second to none. I have and will continue to recommend the programme to my friends/family/anyone who will listen!
Amazing projects and amazing staff!
They were really helpful in organising my trip and answering all of my questions. It was a relief to know there was someone on the other end of the phone if I had a problem.
My daughter and friend went to Costa Rica last year. As a mum of teenager, I had some concerns about the travelling etc as it was first time travelling without family...I needn't have worried, the staff at Oyster uk plus out there in Costa Rica we're all helpful and efficient at dealing with the girls and their travelling. They are going on another trip this year with oyster, to Thailand this time
Oyster were a very friendly and efficient service. They provided all the details for my trip and Anne, my contact, was very helpful at guiding me through everything. The project itself was out of this world. Very environmentally conscious and open minded and a one off experience.
The Whole Trip was amazing fun! For such a large group we were all looked after and accomadated for extremley well. The centre in Brazil was fantastic at getting us and all the kids involved with each activity making the whole trip very enjoyable and something that will stick with us all forever. Both the organisers before and and after we arrived were very friendly and approchable keeping us excited for the whole trip.
I had an amazing time with Oyster and the only reason I haven't given them five stars is there were a couple of minor issues that whilst didn't in anyway spoil my trip were slightly disappointing. The apartment was too small for five people, there was nowhere for all five of us to comfortably socialise and the cooking area was too small for more than one person to prepare food at a time. Also I don't think the project description was 100% accurate. All of the main points were accurate but it was indicated on the website that volunteers would be able to participate in a variety of tasks that didn't happen. I would still highly recommend Oysterworldwide as the good far out ways the bad and if a few small improvements are made they would be more than deserving of a five star review.
The support I got from Oyster worldwide in planning my trip was amazing. They phoned me before I booked to help me make sure I picked the programme that would be most suited to what I wanted. Every step of the way they checked things were progressing and supported me through my preparations. Whilst I was away they made sure that any issues I had were resolved quickly and have since been in contact since my project finished. I always spoke to the same person, who knew who I was, what I was doing and answered any question I had before I went away. I would definitely recommend Oyster Worldwide to anyone wanting to volunteer abroad as the support was personalised and excellent.
