Spent 4weeks in Sri Lanka and had the absolute best time and felt so welcomed by all that worked there. The activités they set up and all the work they put in to make sure we had a fab time was amazing! Miss being there
I had an amazing month in Sri Lanka with TMR! Ayomi, Charith and their family were all lovely and went above and beyond to make sure our time in Sri Lanka was enjoyable. The medical programme was purely observational (as advertised) and but it was still a very valuable and insightful placement. We had lots of free time to explore and there were lots of activities organised by TMR in the afternoons/evenings. We got to do so much during the Cultural Triangle weekend trip too (safari, Sigiriya rock, Dambulla caves and more!). Sri Lanka was an incredible country to visit and I'd love to go back!
I volunteered in Thailand with the street dogs project, it was the best experience of My life! I will definitely be going back for longer! I have made friends for life and everyone there was so friendly. The dogs there are the most happiest dogs you will come across! My trip was booked through the mighty roar who arranged everything for me and even made sure I was doing well when I was out volunteering! I will definitely be booking this again!!
I stayed at The Cosy Stay Hostel with TMR for 2 weeks for my midwifery elective in Tanzania. The team are absolutely amazing, the staff are so friendly and nothing is ever too much. Although the hostel is basic it is clean, the food is great, the transfer service is amazing, I was taken to and from the hospital everyday and to the markets/on trips/supermarket/atm/airport/basically anywhere I needed, whenever I needed it. I have given 4 stars not 5 just because I feel it would be good to have a bottle of water daily as you can't drink the tap water at all, so would be good to have a fresh bottle in the room to clean teeth etc, but as it is only 60p it's definitely not a big deal! I would love to come back again one day.
I have just returned from two and a half weeks with TMR Sri Lanka turtle conservation and travel experience. I had a fantastic time with some truly magical and incredible moments. The staff were all wonderful and supportive, they work incredibly hard to provide a fun and busy schedule. We were incredibly lucky to see three adult female turtles nesting on the beach on the evenings we were patrolling, and helped release over 300 baby turtles while we were there. The beach cleaning, making eco bricks and hatchery cleaning is hot and dirty but eclipsed by the magic of working with the beautiful turtles. The accommodation was clean but very small. There were 8 of us in bunk beds in a room, but we all got on well and most people were out and about in the daytime anyway, so it was fine. Ayomi and Thaksi were lovely and helpful helping organise tuktuks, quizes and cookery lessons for us. The travel experience was action packed, often with two big activities each day. I would recommend going to every single thing as some of my favourite experiences weren't the things I was initially most excited about. (Stick fishing and the traditional dance show featured very highly!) We hiked, safaried, saw amazing temples, wildlife etc We stayed in a range of hotels, mostly nice apart from one. I was surprised that in almost all we had to share double beds. Very rarely were there any beds for people to sleep in on their own. This is definitely my main criticism. Fine if you are travelling in a pair. Many of the hotels had pools but we often arrived late and left early so didn't necessarily get a chance to swim. But they all had aircon and most had mosquito nets. Karu and the two drivers were very hard working and made the trip very special. Quite a few of us went of the Maldives trip at the end and I would definitely recommend doing this if you can. The day trips are out of this world- we snorkelled with wild sharks, dolphins, turtles and fed sting rays. Overall I would highly recommend TMR. Remember that Sri Lanka is a developing country so there will be significant differences from home. The people, food, scenery and wildlife are fabulous and with an open mind you will love your time there!
TMR Experience at Imire Rhino and Elephant conservancy was an incredible experience. Chris at TMR was very communicative and I felt very supported throughout the planning of the trip, journey over, during the volunteering and after trip. Maddie (Imire) created a wonderful experience I’ll never forget - highly recommend this trip to all ages 20-60s if you love and care for nature and animal.
Such an amazing time! Everything was so organised and the staff were lovely. Will defo be using the mighty roar again
I really enjoyed my month in Sri Lanka, Charith, Ayomi and family were so welcoming and kind. The organised activities each week were so fun (surfing!!) and we had so much spare time on the weekends and in the evenings to explore the country. The weekend trips are definitely worth it - especially the Maldives trip. Sometimes organisation and communication can be slow but just have to go with the flow. The Medical elective was so interesting, it was all observational so just expect to only be watching, and the language barrier understandingly limits communication with the nurses, and so communication is mostly with the doctors who are very busy. I would however still recommend for elective placements as even being only observational it is eye opening. Would love to return to Sri Lanka!
The team were so friendly, easy going and committed to giving us a great placement and travel experience. Communication with team leads was easy and messages were responded to super fast. I would love to go back! Loved the itinerary and freedom to plan some of my own activities to make the most of my trip.
I was with TMR Sri Lanka for the travel experience and childcare volunteering and I have nothing but positive words to say. All of the on site staff were lovely and Ayomi really went out of her way to give everyone the best possible experience in Sri Lanka. Everyone was so helpful, driving us to points of interest, giving us advice and welcoming us into their rich and beautiful culture. I strongly suggest TMR Sri Lanka to anyone.
I through enjoyed my time with the might roar. They helped organise all trip and activity we wanted to complete in the two weeks we were there. I volunteered in the local kindergarten and it was lovely environment for the children to be in. However, few of use attended a school trip while out there it was very unorganised and was left to just stand in the sun all morning while everyone sat on the benches, felt very useless!! Overall my volunteering experience was amazing and heart warming 🫶🏻. Air-conditioning was faulty the whole time I was there which was annoying and rooms weren’t very clean after being cleaned on the weekends.
I had the best week ever at the Elephant and Rhino conservation at Imire. The food was incredible, the experiences with the animals were breathtaking and I was with a wonderful group of people. The accomodation was beyond what I imagined and all in all it was perfect. The rangers and hosts made you feel safe and at home.
I have just returned from 5 weeks volunteering in Namibia through TMR and can honestly say it was the best 5 weeks of my life. I met some truly amazing people and saw some incredibly animals (lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes etc) from just a few feet away. I would definitely rate this a 5 star experience, however there are a few things I will note that I think may be of use to others when booking / preparing for this experience: 1) Don’t expect to feel like your voluntary work is making a huge difference to the project. It is clear that the sanctuary benefits mostly from the money volunteers bring in, and whilst there are some activities that seem to genuinely contribute to the running of the sanctuary and reserve (I.e animal cage cleaning, food prep etc) a lot of activities seem to be there just to please us as tourists, or even just to keep the volunteers busy. I heard of someone who was asked to clean the (very wealthy) owners’ driveway as one of her morning activities. I would view this project more as ecotourism (largely a subsidised holiday with only a couple of strenuous tasks involved) than volunteering, and as long as you’re aware of that before you go then you will enjoy it. 2) The booking office can be very disorganised at times. Don’t expect to arrive and immediately be shown to your room, given a full orientation etc. If you leave notes on your booking (I.e requesting a private room, particular transfer details etc), expect these to have been ignored. The ladies in the booking office are lovely and will sort things out for you, but they don’t seem to have a great system in there resulting in a lot of communication issues. It seems a shame that the ones who complained and kicked off about issues were the ones who got upgraded (at no extra charge) to better accommodation, partial refunds etc. As a British traveller I found it uncomfortable kicking up a fuss about certain minor inconveniences, but it appeared those who did were immediately given a better experience. Also, the accommodations vary significantly and there is no price difference. For instance, you could get a shared tent with no insulation (meaning it gets very hot in the day and very cold at night) with a cold, outdoor shower shared across four people, or you could be put in the luxury villa with a sofa, fridge, WiFi, fans and three bathrooms. I’m fine with basic accommodation, but it doesn’t seem fair the higher standard of accommodation incurs no extra charges. As a student, it is a little frustrating to save up for a programme like this and be put into the cheapest of rooms, whilst older volunteers with significantly more disposable income than me were given the higher standard accommodation at no additional cost. 3) There are lots of other projects you can get involved with. TMR’s handbook for the project in Namibia is pretty outdated and could include a lot more details about the other programmes N’a/ankuse run. Within a few days of arriving at the main sanctuary and reserve, you will be given an induction presentation explaining the other projects they run in Namibia, with ones at the coast, in the desert, at other reserves etc. You have the option to book onto these while you are there and I would highly recommend doing so, as the accommodation is significantly better at little extra cost. I did the coastal project and I couldn’t believe how gorgeous the house we stayed in was, at just £60 extra for the whole week! Budget and plan your time accordingly, lots of people did three weeks (two weeks at the main sanctuary and reserve in order to complete a full rotation of activities, and then a week at one of the other project sites.) 4) You don’t have to book through TMR. Personally, I like the reassurance of booking through TMR. I booked with them for a project in Bali as well, and found them really helpful throughout the process. However, bear in mind they are just a third party organisation and you can book with N’a/ankuse (the name of the Namibian company) directly. I would recommend reading up on N’a/ankuse on their website before you go anyway. Alternatively, there are lots of other third parties you can book through. I heard good things about The Great Project, and having met one of their coordinators over in Namibia, they seem similarly well organised like TMR. Do your research and find the best deal as everyone there seemed to have been charged varying rates depending on who they booked through, yet we all ended up volunteering in the same place. Overall, I had an absolutely fantastic experience with N’a/ankuse in Namibia. It really was a once in a lifetime experience and I’d recommend it to people in a heartbeat. You make friends for life and see so many incredible things. If you have any doubts, just do it! You won’t regret it.
The Mighty Roar we’re so on top of things and made me feel very well prepared, just want to thank them for making me trip feel very smooth and easy as much as possible!
An unimaginable experience. My time in Tanzania was beyond special. The local team in Tanzania are amazing and deserve every bit of praise. The work in which the charities carry out is amazing. If you have the opportunity to volunteer you most certainly should. There are also lots of amazing day trips and activities that you can experience outside of volunteering time. Would highly recommend!!
Unforgettable experience in Tanzania with the mighty roar. Everyone I met was very welcoming and went above and beyond during my stay in Moshi. All staff in the hospital were welcoming and a lot was learnt. The trips we did with the mighty roar were brilliant and very well organised, everyone went above and beyond. Thank you!
An absolutely amazing experience. TMR staff were so helpful throughout the whole process- upon booking, prior to arrival as well as on arrival. This is something that I believe everyone needs to experience at least once in their lifetime! Absolutely unforgettable. All the support staff at the hostel were amazing and could not do anything more for us- thank you so much. I would highly recommend TMR.
I had the best 2 weeks in Zimbabwe with amazing people. Everything was amazingly organised from the work we were doing to the accommodation and the food was incredible. The chefs are some of the best! I would highly recommend visiting Victoria Falls for the Big 5 conservation, an unforgettable experience!
Had the most amazing experience in Tanzania working with The Mighty Roar, such a well organised volunteering company and the staff are fantastic. Can’t wait to go back!!!

Apr 22,2024I’ve just returned from the Sri Lanka Travel & Volunteer Experience and had the most unforgettable 2 weeks! The local team work so hard to make everyone feel so welcomed and at home and it’s genuinely so easy to settle in because they are so friendly and helpful. You will meet lots of friendly faces like Mr Karu, Uncle, Ayomi, Charith, Mammoo, Thaksi, all the drivers etc and come away really missing everyone! The volunteer projects are a great opportunity to get some hands on experience whilst also having plenty of free time to explore the local area. The team organises lots of group activities so you’ll never be bored. It’s also the absolute best way to meet lots of people and you’ll make lots of friends along the way. The travel experience is great and takes away any stress related to logistics and organisation, allowing you to just fully enjoy your time in this beautiful country. It also enhances a visit to Sri Lanka with so much local knowledge from Mr Karu who will go out of his way to make your trip the most memorable experience! I can’t recommend enough and can’t wait to join another TMR project, and maybe even return to Sri Lanka one day 😊
