Staying for 2 weeks for a medical experience. I can honestly say that the service, food and all staff have been absolutely amazing. Friendly and very helpful. Even if you are young, old, travelling in a group or alone you will always have something to do. They organise everything for you if you want to participate but it is ok if you don't want to they can help you go explore on your own by arranging transport. We have just been away for the cultural triangle weekend and it was such an amazing once in a lifetime experience for me, Karu and the driver (Apologies I forget his name) went above and beyond and nothing was a problem. We really enjoyed our weekend. You've helped create beautiful memories and for this I am very grateful. Totally recommend.
Excellent experience with the mighty roar. We have just been on the "Cultural triangle trip" and we had the most amazing experience. Karu explained everything to us and we were given plenty of time at each stop. They ensured that our experience is the best possible and all the stops were well thought through and a truly amazing insight to all the different parts of their culture. I would 100% recommend it as it gives a stressfree and well organised experience.
Fantastic location in Ghana with super friendly locals and certain staff members are great at looking after you. The medical experience would be perfect for midwives but lacked opportunities in other areas. There was also a few issues with staff and food/ water (due to a chemical problem in the fridge). However, it was an incredible experience and I’m glad to have done it, I would recommend one month as a good length of time.
Had a great trip - full credit to Winyoo for organising an amazing weekend trip as well as a cooking class, a muay thai class and more. Made memories to last a long long time!
I’ve spent 4 and a half weeks with the mighty roar in Sri Lanka and it has been an absolutely amazing experience. The team are so lovely and really listen and look after you. I did the travel experience which I highly recommend as it broke up the volunteering and meant I could see lots more of Sri Lanka. Karu was an excellent tour guide and kept us laughing and entertained during our travels. It was a full itinerary so didn’t leave much free time for exploring ourselves but you see so much for the price you pay. There was a small group of us on the travel experience and we all became close which was really nice. As a first time solo traveller it was just the right amount of support and helped me with having a structure. I went back to some of the places we visited on weekend trips with friends and on days out. The childcare volunteering was good, helping to teach the kindergarten students the english alphabet and playing with them. It’s a good way to immerse yourself a bit further into Sri Lankan culture. Whilst in Sri Lanka Ayomi, Thaksi and the team were so kind, helpful and caring. When you need something you just have to ask and they do their best to help. If you’re not feeling great they will bring you soup and toast to your room or even a fresh coconut to help if you’ve been in the sun too long, they really do look after you here. You can ask them anything and they are very happy to share information about Sri Lanka and their culture which is interesting to learn about. I was in Sri Lanka during Vesak (a buddhist celebration) and we made traditional lantern decorations and visited the temple with decorations before having free food. It has been amazing experiencing a country so different to home. The accommodation is pretty basic with bunk beds and sharing rooms of up to 8 but you tend to become a little family in your room and if you’re unhappy with your room you can move rooms to be with friends you’ve made or request a private room (a small extra charge). They have a large eating area and some cool hangout spots which are good for games of cards (you’ll learn lots of new games). It’s been great the amount of people I have met and shared so many experiences with, I’d say definitely don’t be afraid of coming alone as everyone has been so welcoming and friendly and is most likely in the same position as you. I have loved meeting people with all different backgrounds doing various types of volunteering and have made some amazing friendships. Most volunteering is only on for part of the day and TMR organise activities for the afternoons such as football, volleyball, kayaking, bat tours and more. The weekends are free and a great time to go on a solo trip (or with friends you have met there) to see somewhere different. I personally loved Mirissa and going surfing. The food they serve can get quite repetitive but it’s good considering the small kitchen they are producing to much food from. You can also made certain requests (I asked for garlic bread) and they might make things for you. If you get tired of the food you can go out at any time for meals in the local area you just have to let the staff know. The only thing that I would change would be the curfew of 10pm. I understand that it’s a suggestion so that volunteers get up and participate in their activities the next day but I think that most people who don’t go out would also be up past 10pm anyways. Because the journey to Hikkaduwa is around 10 minutes it makes it slightly more difficult to join in with a karaoke night as you have to go very early to have time spent there. Overall I have had an amazing trip with The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. Thank you to the whole team and especially Ayomi!
I spent 3 weeks in Sri Lanka as part of my medical school elective. Everything apart from flights and visas was sorted by the TMR team and they could not be more helpful! They are super easy to get in touch with and made us feel very prepared for the experience. The team in Sri Lanka were absolutely fantastic and really made us feel welcome. Everyone was super helpful, organising transport for weekends away, organising afternoon activities for us and whatever else we needed! The medical programme was as stated in the information online - it is an observational placement. All the doctors know English and were happy to chat and explain things to us as well as let us read through the notes etc. We were able to rotate around several specialties including A&E, Obs&Gynae, paediatrics and surgery. I also went on the weekend trip (Cultural Triangle) which I would definitely recommend as it was such good value for money and made seeing the key tourist attractions super easy. We also had some amazing local food and had the best tour guide on the safari! I would definitely recommend this elective experience and will return to Sri Lanka for sure :)
Best 2 weeks of my life! All the staff both local and online were so helpful for the duration and build up of my trip. I will definitely be going back!
I have been doing medical elective in Moshi, Tanzania for 4 weeks. Everyone is very friendly and I have made a lot of unforgettable memories there. Strongly recommend everyone to visit this amazing place!
Whole experience was great ! Nicky and Justin very much made the experience even better. The work we did was hard but pretty fun and the predator monitoring was amazing. Got to see all the animals within 2 weeks ! The evening time was great very social group and nice that Nicky and Justin joined in. Each day can be unpredictable as our trailer tyre popped and the cruiser broke down but we worked around it. An amazing experience as a whole 🤍
I loved everything about my trip. Nicky and Justin were excellent coordinators, taking us on amazing drives through the park and listening to our interests and tailoring our experience to it. We did lots of work in the park and with the local community and had a few fun teambuilding events and trips. I grew very close to the group of volunteers and I didn’t want to come home just yet. Highly recommend!
I absolutely loved working with the dogs in Tanzania, it was such a fun experience, and the trip to Zanzibar was amazing, snorkeling with the fish and seeing the monkeys in the jungle was such an amazing adventure, meeting all the new people and getting to explore the culture was so fun, and it gave me a massive confidence boost, even though I only spent two weeks in Tanzania. I loved every second of it. I’m going to miss it and everyone I met there
I did a 2 week medical elective in Sri Lanka with the mighty roar. I decided three weeks before the programme started I wanted to do it. Having a company arrange everything except flights is incredibly convenient, I had tried contacting hospitals previously without much luck. For my actual elective - I was in Elpitiya base hospital 3-4 days a week, then the other day I was in the traditional ayuvedic clinic. The days were all half days (dropped off and picked up ss a group in an air conditioned minibus). On the application form they ask you what specialties you are interested in and they allocate you to that, so I shadowed in general surgery, emergency medicine, paediatrics, antenatal and general medicine. The doctors train in English so I could at least read the notes. The doctors sometimes were too busy to explain anything on the ward round but that is completely understandable (also typical from my med school experience in the UK). The accommodation is in Akurala, south coast and just across the road from the beach which was just so nice. The food was really good, there are options to eat out in nearby places if you want something different. Filtered water is everywhere too which is nice. I did the cultural triangle weekend trip which was also a lot of fun too. Sri Lanka as a country is amazing. I solo travelled om my own after, it was my first time but I felt completely safe. It also was the start of the monsoon season so the weather was still nice. Very easy to get around, so much to do and the people are kind. I had a great time!
I strongly recommend the 9 day travel experience. For a decent price you get to see most of the big cities and attractions in Sri Lanka, I had an amazing time and made some great friends. There wasn’t much free time but that’s expected with such a full itinerary. Karu is a legend and one of the friendliest guys I’ve ever met, kept us laughing the whole trip. Not only Karu, but when you are volunteering the whole family are lovely, all of them are super helpful if you need anything at all, especially Thaksi and Ayomi. They were great at organising activities and teaching us about their community and way of life. The accommodation is decent considering the number of people there, rooms with AC cleaned every week and good hangout spots, food could get repetitive but had some nice meals as well. I’d say they did pretty well considering the size of their kitchen and the amount of people they need to feed. You could also eat out at anytime and if you wanted a certain food, they’ll probably cook it for you. The curfew was a little annoying as I feel most people can stay out later than 10pm and still volunteer the next day, but I understand that some people would abuse this, maybe a warning system would be better. The turtle volunteering was decent, be prepared to give up a few of your evenings but it was worth it to release baby turtles.
Amazing experience best 2 weeks of my life. The team are so friendly and it was so insightful volunteering over in Sri Lanka, 100% would recommend to anyone.
I volunteered for only 1 week in the teaching programme and wish I could have done longer! I was able to teach in a few different places, schools and community teaching. I was also able to do a morning in kindergarten. One night we were even able to see the baby turtles being released after hatching. Ayomi and her team were wonderful and welcoming. They are always on hand to sort any problems that may arise and can also help with arranging transport when needed. Rooms are comfortable with aircon and the accommodation is right by the beach. Three meals are provided each day and vegans and vegetarians were very well catered for. There is a good amount of free time and they organise fun activities too! Thank you so much! I would definitely recommend.
I loved my experience at the mighty roar, I volunteered with the street dogs which I loved and Thaksi was absolutely great. The actual travel part was lovely and we got to see so many incredible places, Karu is an amazing tour guide!
Staff are nice and helpful. accommodation is cleaned regularly. Had free time in afternoons and weekends to explore Sri Lanka. Enjoyed the activities put on by the team. Some doctors did teaching which was good. The food isn’t very good. For the hospital placement it was only observational. Some doctors ignored us on placement. Was dependent which ward you were on.
Ayomi, Thaksi, Mammu and the rest of the team were all really friendly and welcoming. Overall I had a good experience and made lots of friends. The medical elective gave me insight into a different medical system and allowed me to better appreciate traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The accomodation was basic but nice with lots of social space. There are a very limited number of plugs given the number of people staying in the rooms so it's worth bringing an extension cord. The WiFi didn't work. The food is extremely repetitive In terms of the medical elective, I felt it wasn't quite as advertised. I had a good experience but it was purely observational and the doctors don't really interact with you in the hospital. The Ayurvedic clinic was interesting to experience. The weekend trips pack a lot in to a small space of time. They're good if your goal is to see as much of Sri Lanka as possible, but if you'd prefer to have more down time and a chance to properly explore each place you visited I'd advise against them.

Jun 10,2024My experience in Busua was one of a kind. It was the most rewarding, overwhelming, yet humbling 2weeks and i shall remember it forever. The sense of passion and dedication to learning from most of the children, from such underprivileged backgrounds, created an inspirational aurora that I doubt you can find in many other places. Knowing how under-resourced and under-funded the schools are and just how important and essential education is for all children, i was surprised with the way the people of Busua all held on to hope and created such a positive atmosphere around education and promoted it with such determination and excitement. Also loved the Cape Coast weekend trip - so much fun and great expereinces. My only negative comment would be about the accommodationin Busua - it should be upgraded to a better standard for the price you pay for the programme.
