Avis Car Hire offers a premium car rental experience in Ireland, with locations in Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Galway, Knock, Belfast, and Derry.
Never had such a poor service renting a car. Ever. The car was high mileage with dents and scratches all over when I picked it up, although this wasn't flagged at the desk as they had to send the forms to be by e-mail because of covid (do me a favor). The clutch was also end of life or needed adjusting. The corporate deal we have should have covered CDW but didn't so I had to pay extra to a guy behind the desk with a super-poor attitude. To make it worse they tried to do me over with a claim that I'd damaged the vehicle adding 4 new scratches (even though I'd just driven down the motorway and back?) The guy at returns admitted they were probably there already but hadn't been picked up as they were a bit shoddy and he knew how many poor reviews they got on trip advisor! Also, this is a classic, on the 'damage' forms sent over by email this morning the link to submit further information doesn't work. Says it all really!
We rented a car at the Dublin airport during the week of 07 June 2022. The gentleman at the pick up counter was exceptional and very helpful. When we returned the car we were told that claim would be made on a VERY small ding in the rear passenger door. This tiny ding could have very well been there when we picked up the car, but because we have been Avis preferred customers for many, many years and have always had a wonderful experience with Avis at many locations around the world, we did not do a detailed inspection of the car on pick up. We were then charged over $700.00 for the door ding!!! The shuttle driver from the drop off point to the terminal was rude and when I asked him to assist me, he very rudely told me to "Just sit down". Beware of the staff at the Dublin drop off point. They will be rude and overcharge you!
This was the worst car rental I have ever had. The cost was exorbitant, the service dismal and the car was high mileage with almost every panel chipped or scratched. The registration show on both the contract and key fob was different to that of the car which made finding our car difficult. When I returned to the airport the agent just gave me a dumb smile when he told me that he knew of this problem!
We were on the receiving end of shocking and appalling treatment by Bart at Avis Dublin Airport. My brother made a booking in good faith via his company portal but there has been an error in the booking. Bart checked our reservations, confused our booking with another booking that happen to have the same last name as us (Low is a very common surname), accused us of trying to manipulate and defraud Avis, threatened to blacklist us from Avis Ireland and globally, never gave us the chance to tell our side of the story, and completely ruined the beginning of what should have been a lovely family reunion in Ireland. He was constantly on the phone with his manager whom he claimed was the “CEO” of Avis Ireland, but refused to let us speak to him to clarify the misunderstanding. We ended up having to make a far more expensive rental even though we had made a bookig with Avis entirely in good faith. Fortunately, this has not ruined our holiday and it is a price worth paying for never having to deal with this dishonest and discriminatory company again. I’ve never been treated so disrespectfully by a rental company in my life. Avoid this car hire like the plague. Post reply edit: I want to put on record that Lisa's reply is misleading. The issue is not about the use of corporate discount codes for family members - the issue is and remains the treatment of and disproportionate response to customers acting in good faith. Your staff accused me and my family of fraud, a CRIMINAL OFFENSE - and the basis of this accusation was a mistaken identity with another customer that happened to share our last name.
Having had a bad experience at another hire firm I have used Avis twice since and found them to be everything you should expect from a car hie firm and more. Critically fees and charges were explained clearly up front.
We ad a great rental experience with AVIS in Ireland largely due to the courteous and efficient efforts of the customer service representative Mr. Felipe Castro. We definitely will use AVIS in the future thanks to our dealings with Mr. Castro.
Rented the car. Drove during day, at night the front light did not work properly which was dangerous and hence limited my use of the car. Called the customer service desk in Dublin where I picked up the car and was was told " that's your problem. Was shocked at the response. When I returned, I again asked why this was not addressed etc, the attendant Mary Ann told me to contact customer service for a refund , at least partial. I did, they wrote back a glib response. I wrote back . No response. Worst service ever and very dishonest. Stay away as obviously do not care for safety of customer and is a big rip off.
I had a rental agreement showing a rental cost of 206.59 EUR. Then I was charged 652.29 EUR. This is an incredibly large discrepancy. I have the paperwork to prove it and can easily file a credit card chargeback to get my money back.
Avoid this company (Budget/Avis) Got charged huge amount for a nearly invisible scratch to the car that I was not aware off. Staff at pick up used the wrong credit card (not the one I used to do the online booking with), so no insurance coverage. After sale customer support most unsupportive and unfriendly.
I had a really terrible experience here. The pick up location is dark but I checked the car, photographed the marks I saw and left. When I returned the car, the Avis rep was immediately really unfriendly and I have never before had such an inspection. It normally involves a quick walk around and an answer to the question " was everything ok". This time the rep was standing there waiting with a white strobe light to inspect the car ( of course no such light available on pick up.....) and gleefully identified marks and seemed disappointed when she discovered that they were already on her card. She persevered with her strobe lighting forensic level inspection until she finally found what she was looking for - marks that were not visible to naked eye and to be honest, barely visible even with her torch. They knew I had my own insurance but still asked me about three times whether I had cover. I am convinced it's an Avis operated scam to get 3rd party insurance companies to pay for their existing damages.I will not use them again. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
My husband booked a car for me on line with full insurance and when I arrived to the airport the guy of Avis desk told me that we did not have any insurance. I contracted an nsurance only for yhe car in order not to have troubles. When I returned the car back I claimed but the Avis agent told me that it was not possible to refund the insurance double paid because I signed and confirm the insurance terms. They gain money by lying people specially when people comes fron other countries with difficulties to understand. Never more with Avis!!! As I have seen it is not the first time. Most of people claims similar situations on forums.
Chose Avis just because they answer back to all negative complaints on Trustpilot. So what went bad? I got charged for car insurance even if I said I don't want it. Problem is I signed for it. :) (JUST HAVE A LOOK AT THE TOTAL AMOUNT before you sign). Can't believe these things happen in a main airport in a western country. Conversation went like this: Me: No, I don't want insurance Guy: Ok, so just the car. Me: Just the car. Result: got the car insured. For future customers: - watch how you communicate - check what you sign - take pictures of all the scratches as they will look(not sure why they looked at mine, if it was insured) - spit that old guy at the counter in the face :)
Hired a car in cork airport this week The customer service was amazing and the girl was very helpful. The car was bigger than I expected but very clean and comfortable. The kids enjoyed the suv/jeep experience. Overall a good experience just a little unsure as to when the fuel deposit will be returned
Hired a car on 23 December. Seat Leon. 106k kms on the clock. Rattled and vibrated. Horrible !!!!! Took us 1 hour from landing to driving away / painful process
Upfront payment for the car, asked if I wanted the car to be insured (of course I said yes). Was told the amount I was paying at the time would be fully refunded. Guess what, not all refunded. Cost of the car hire doubled due to services I never asked for, contract unclear. Avis hiding behind the contract as the costs being valid. Underhand sales tactics and not a fair customer experience.
We had fully purchase a rental car voucher online prior to our trip to Ireland only to find out that Avis charged us too...almost to the penny for the voucher rate. Voucher comp says extra charges were for additional insurances at €8 a day and a fee of €26 to waive the comprehensive coverage because my credit card covers this (and I had that letter with me) Fees wasnt explained for the additional rates at time of signing in airport. They said e-sign here so I did. This doubled the cost of the rental. Very deceptive practice I think they use when you book through a third party
This is the most shocking and unprofessional car hire company I have had the misfortune to use to date. I would advise people not to use this company. I will also be advising my corporate business to pull our company business from ever using budget rent a car or Avis as they are not to be trusted. They think very little of the customer - shame on you Avis and your business principles.
Be warned, keep out. To all readers, please be extremely careful with renting with this company, this is by far the worst experience I've ever had. We had fully purchase a rental car voucher online prior to our trip to Ireland only to found out on our return from holidays that they have double charged us. They told us that the extra charges were for the full cover which was added to our agreement, without any explanations and having us signed the paper, of course in a hurry after a very long flight. Partly our fault for not having questioned their integrity and read every line in detail but we were far off thinking they would be so sneaky. this left us with a 800 euros surplus to our holiday, needless to say we were very unhappy and the response from their customer service was outrageous and uncourteous. AVOID is my advise.
Nearly all car rental companies come out badly on these kinds of reviews so you end up going on your own experience. I'd rented from Avis in England a few months ago so I went with them though they are long way from the cheapest. On the good side, I did get the model I'd actually booked (this is not common), the staff were polite though there was some messing about with who dealt with Avis and who with Budget. So far, so minor and, happily, it wasn't very busy so I didn't have much of a wait. Returning the car was more hasslesome involving some pretty unnecessary queueing just so an 'agent' could tell me all the paperwork was completed The key problems were: a) the car was malfunctioning - a problem with the drive train which made the car judder under load. This didn't show up in the kind of slow driving you do when in unfamiliar situations and I first thought it was road surface. I had to get to Monaghan and didn't have time to get the car replaced so did the 300 km round trip wondering if I would make it back b) they actively disabled the in-built satnav so they could attempt to charge me extra for it! Outrageous gouging IMO given the car came with it c) charging the whole 2000 euro excess to my card at time of rental. This is just another way of pressuring you into taking their overpriced extra insurance -------- Just responding to the Avis comment (though I'm not sure why I'm bothering)... * I don't see much point in providing you more detail about the car and the rental agreement. This just gives me work to do with no benefit to me. You should have better quality control methods which prevent faulty cars being provided to new renters. * I don't remember seeing the proposition that you would charge the whole of the excess to my credit card at the beginning of the rental (though no doubt it was there somewhere in the documentation). My complaint is that you were doing it AT ALL. This means that you already have my money and I have to fight to get it back from you. Totally unreasonable transfer of liability in my opinion * I note that you don't comment on your trick of disabling the supplied sat nav feature so you can unreasonably try to charge me to put it back again

Oct 27,2022We hire cars in Ireland several times a year from various providers. This week we hired one through BUDGET & were provided one via Avis when we arrived at Dublin Airport yesterday morning. The is the WORST hire car we have EVER had! I would say it resembles a tin can on wheels. The quality of the vehicle is more like a car from the 80’s. The wipers scrape across the front windshield & they make the most horrific noise when switched on. The USB/phone charging port has been ripped out, which is extremely annoying when it comes to charging your phone when driving. The car is covered in scratches & was dirty inside as well as out. I wish we had rejected it at the offset as I now have to drive this heap of junk around Ireland until we fly back home. Certainly not the quality of vehicle we have experienced on all our other trips to Ireland. Extremely disappointed.
