Tax is complicated; the cycle to work scheme is not. You choose a bike, hire it for an agreed length of time, then snap it up for a fraction of its original value. It's like a year-round sale, with interest free credit available in over 2,000 retailers nationwide.
I don't normally write reviews but felt people should be informed. The scheme from start to finish is a very inefficient process. You decide what you want to buy and you fill in an application form with the value of the goods you wish to purchase. Then you wait an unspecified amount of time for your employer to verify and actually pay for the goods, which I assume are held in some type of custody account administered by cyclescheme. This can take a really long time (up to a month) while the goods you had your eyes on either go out of stock or change in price. In my case it was both and choosing new goods is so disruptive that it becomes a chore just going through this process over and over. What's worse is the scheme (which is supposed to be a government led incentive) is a highly profitable and private equity owned business that takes a massive cut from the cost of goods sold through the scheme. As a result, bike firms don't actually want to do this business but have no choice as any additional income is better than no income at all. Fundamentally...it leaves a bitter aftertaste for what is supposed to be a friendly and green scheme aiming to do good. The reality is very different.
Very very long drawn out process! I’ve used other schemes in the past that were quick and hassle free with none of the ridiculously long waiting times I experienced from cycle Scheme. I’m already having the payment deducted from my wages and still haven’t received the certificate of collection! So I’m paying for something I haven’t got! Last scheme I used was pretty much instant... I didn’t realise I’d have to wait over 2 months. Cycle scheme have told me it takes 30 days for the certificate so when I contacted them on the 30th day to chase it up they then told me it takes 4-6 weeks. They said it’s delayed because my employer hasn’t completed what’s required on there end but after speaking to my employer they completed everything on 28-09-20. It’s now 31-10-20 and still no certificate and two payments made towards it
So far this has been a very painful process. My employer has finally approved my application for the cyclescheme (not the cyclescheme's fault it took so long) however when trying to use the website I regularly receive a timed out error when trying to login. When the website does load, I frequently cannot login on a desktop computer. If I use a mobile it sometimes works. Having finally managed to log in and sign my hire agreement I am told it still needs to be paid which can take another 30 days! Whilst some of the issues around the timescales are down to my employer, the poorly functioning website has made this a much more difficult process.
Amazed at how quickly from choosing a bike to receiving it was, especially during the current Covid situation. I am puzzled that I paid £1550 for my ebike & when I asked for my invoice from the retailer, it was £1380. I asked if this was because of the different battery, but I was told it was because the Cyclescheme charges retailers 12%.
Really easy to apply for and an affordable way to get a bike.
Cyclescheme was very quick to process my application and, once my employer paid, to get the certificate issued. My only frustration in the whole process of getting on 2 wheels was finding a suitable bike in a really short market but nothing that Cyclescheme can do about that :-). As a result then no savings to report...
Great easy service to use
Excellent service and easy to use
My experience with Cyclescheme was excellent. From initial enquiry to obtaining the certificate to the bike arriving was all quick and easy.
Great service that worked well from start to finish
Very kind and helpful team, very good comunication, and fast response! Highly recommended!
A good way to get a decent bike to get you on the road.
Really good experience from start to finish, easy to apply for the scheme and all processed quickly. Received the certificate quickly and was easy to check out through my chosen retailer. In terms of the bike order, there was a delay in receiving the bike due to current demand but this was communicated throughout, and the bike was actually delivered a month earlier than my initial delivery date, so I was very happy about that. All in all, a very easy process to navigate through, and more than happy with the actual bike!
Really great experience. And my new bike is awesome 😁
Really simple, e voucher, ordered the bike on line and entered the details bike delivered a few days after - simple as !
I couldn't believe how straightforward it was to get a voucher and then to order a bike. The challenge I had was finding a bike big enough for me at this busy time for bike retailers, but that wasn't Cyclescheme's fault. Everything went smoothly ordering the voucher, my employer did what was needed of them and I had my bike within 10 days of placing the order. I would definitely recommend this to others.
Everything was straight forward and Evans cycles were really helpful. I now have a lovely bike and the correct waterproofs so I can ride in any weather. I use my bike every day to commute so it was important that I have a good bike and the correct equipment. This scheme has enabled me to do that
I am unhappy with Cyclescheme’s customer service. I hadn’t realised you had to buy everything in one transaction from same retailer (it wasn’t made clear to me that it’s effectively a ‘one time voucher’) so I’ve ended up with a much higher account to settle than for the goods I’ve actually received. Phoned Cyclescheme for help once I realised this and was told I’ve to approach retailer to ask them to agree to cancel original voucher and accept a new one before they can do anything. Problem is retailer is flat out struggling to cope with a surge in demand so have no time/incentive to sort out some random paperwork from a customer whose bike they delivered...end of. Cyclescheme have been unhelpful and left me with the issue, feels like all they are interested in is commission for setting it up, end of story 🙁
Really simple procedure, no problems at all. Really happy with the savings, so would recommend the service. Just got my 6 week free service, which is a nice bonus.
