Our experience volunteering with the wildlife friends foundation, organised through the mighty roar was humbling and incredible all rolled into one. The work that goes into ensuring the animals have a much better life than the ones they were rescued from is second to none, the love and respect for every single animal is clear for all to see. I would 100% recommend booking through the mighty roar and supporting WFFT!

Sri Lanka is a beautiful place to visit. The teaching was enjoyable, however quite limited as we were only given a couple of hours each day. The accomodation is basic, the rooms are small which is expected, however our aircon did break often meaning the room was boiling. The food is nice but on two occasions people discovered maggots which meant on the last night we ate pot noodles. Although a lot of fun, the weekend trip was disorganised and considerably more expensive then if you organise the trip yourself and we were never given enough time to explore properly. TMR were very good at offering extra activities e.g kayaking, surfing (although at an extra cost). Ayomi and her family are absolutely lovely and overall I had a really enjoyable two week stay and made some lovely friends.

I had an amazing time, being immersed by culture and getting to spend time with the elephants

Sri Lanka was a great destination. The teaching and childcare are rewarding, enjoyable and easy to swap between. The weekend trips are cheaper to do yourself and mean less time pressure. Travelling is easy outside of the project. The room was mouldy which meant having to move.

Spent 4 weeks in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro and had the BEST time. I’m a paramedic student and worked in all the departments within Mawenzi hospital, including ED, psychiatry, maternity, NICU, and operating theatre. It was such a valuable experience learning about different cultures, how they treat conditions differently to the UK and learning about the county as a whole. When I wasn’t at the hospital, TMR organised so many amazing trips to waterfalls, hot springs and visiting local orphanages. I also attended the Safari weekend and Zanzibar which were both incredible and worth the money. Only advice I’d give would be to fly out to Zanzibar early like I did to experience more of the amazing island! The staff at Summit hostel were all so kind and accommodating to any needs we had and cooked lovely meals for us each day. Thank you all so much and I hope to one day come back!

Did my medical elective in Sri Lanka. There were quite a few positives about this trip, including the experiences, new friendships, weekend trips and spending time with friends in an amazing country with so much to offer. However, I’d like to still list some things that didn’t sit right with me and that people should know about before booking: - Not clear with specialty selection and preferences. You can put surgery as a preference but there’s no time in theatre allowed. Asked twice to two different people over message to send me to a teaching hospital go get some time in the operating theatre early on in the trip, no luck. A friend of mine asked and she got there within a few days of asking. Thought it wasn’t fair at all and when I tried to swap with her for one single day I was told I don’t have insurance to go to that hospital, even though our university would give millions of pounds to the hospital even if we only touched someone by mistake as specified by a form that was signed by the local team….They should say that no theatre time is allowed and specify some other specialties might be available upon request in the teaching hospital subject to availability. I was under the impression it was possible to do swap on my own accord, my mistake. I understand the limitations, I didn’t like the approach and attitude to the situation and thought the end result was unfair. - One of the girls working at the accommodation came into my room looking for an extension lead, we said we needed it. Her excuse was that we wouldn’t need it so it was ok for her to take it. Realistically she probably would have just taken it it if no one had been there and even if she had returned it later, taking things from other people without asking is not right. - I am still missing one of my tshirts, last time I saw it was at the accommodation before a weekend trip. I even found one of my nice tshirts under my mattress (fortunately I checked before leaving). This is not a massive deal overall, it was just annoying not finding it because it was a present and I am very tidy with my stuff to avoid exactly this, so naturally I’m gonna be upset about coming back after a weekend trip and not finding it and additionally discovering another one of my tshirts in a very unusual place. - Handbook is super outdated even though the dates are for 2024. Prices are cheap enough, but not as cheap as suggested. For example, at the risk of sounding like an alcoholic, beer is not 44p and a western meal is not £2. I think it should be updated properly for convenience as this can be a big deal for volunteers on a tight budget. Thank you

I spent 7 weeks in Moshi Tanzania for my elective medical placement. I had an amazing experience both at the hospital and the hostel. At the hostel staff were friendly and welcoming, they offered help whenever needed. At the hospital everyone one were also friendly and willingly to teach and help. I was able to attend different departments, which I found very helpful because I was able to learn lot. There were even activities that were very interesting and enjoyable. This program gave opportunities that I will forever be grateful for, for example learning about Masai tribe, meeting new people, going to Zanzibar, doing Kilimanjaro based camp and going on Safari.

Myself and my partner had a wonderful time working with the turtles during hatchling season in Greece. The programme was very well run and everything we got involved in felt meaningful and purposeful. Being so close to nature and helping to conserve the turtle population was truly an amazing and rewarding trip.

Just finished 3 weeks of the childcare programme in Ghana! Had such an amazing time and couldn't have done it without Dinah and her team. They are such lovely people, so easy to talk to and work so hard to make sure we all have an amazing experience. Definitely prepare yourself for some power cuts and culture shocks and accept it as part of the wonderful experience!

Ghana has such a community feel, with such lovely people within it. The team is always happy to help and encourage you to talk to them if needed. The programmes offer such a range of experience, from the hospital to childcare and there’s a chance to see all. Take all you can as an opportunity and a chance to learn more. Be open and make a difference where you can!!Thank you so much to Dinah, Francis Abigail and Laura for making it so enjoyable and supported :)!would recommend booking weekend trips to make the most of the time and keep you busy, as well as visiting church and local groups/activities if it’s for you!

Loved the Teaching program in Sri Lanka! The cultural triangle weekend trip was an especially great highlight. The teaching itself was also brilliant, but it could’ve been a little more substantial, - we would only be there for about an hour, and it wasn’t very precisely planned.

I’ve just come back from childcare volunteering in Bali. Best thing I’ve ever done! Tianyar is a very welcoming village, and the camp is situated by the most gorgeous beach. Everyone you meet is so lovely, from the locals to volunteers from the other projects. I had never been away that far on my own before, but it was reassuring to know there was always help available around the camp and school if I needed it. My favourite part of this trip was being away from tourist areas on weekday's because it meant I could learn about balinese traditions first-hand. I was fortunate enough to visit a local temple with other volunteers during a ceremony, which I found very interesting. The children in my class were so excited to learn every day which was so lovely to see. I hope I taught them valuable skills because I know for sure I learnt so much from them!

I am recently back from the best trip to Namibia. I spent two weeks volunteering at Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary, and then moved on to Timbila Nature Reserve for a week, which was incredible! I met the most amazing people, and all the staff were so helpful and friendly. The Mighty Roar team were great in helping me decide which projects I wanted to do, and I found the kit list they provided in the handbook very helpful for packing. The trip was 10/10, I just wish I went for longer!!

I did the sea turtle programme in sri lanka with my family. it was the perfect experience, i got to see lots of hatchlings being released and we were all able to properly get involved with the releases which was the most amazing experience! i made friends that i’ll have for a life time and got to meet so many amazing people who were inspiring and all so kind. we also did the 9 day travel experience which Karu and our bus driver made exciting and unforgettable! would very much recommend. with the turtle programme there was more free time in the days which at first was surprising, but once we went into Hikaduwa and the nearby places like Galle, TMR was the perfect location to chill out but also close to some beautiful and exciting places.

The experience in Sri Lanka all in all was amazing. I met some incredible people and the dog programme was so much fun. All the staff were so lovely and welcoming, especially Thaksi, Kavi and Ninja who I worked more closely with. I would 100% recommend the dog programme to anyone who wishes to get some experience. The only thing I would say is that the food is pretty much the same everyday so I would bring some additional money for eating out a day or two of the week. I would use the mighty roar again in a heartbeat, perhaps somewhere else in the world as there are so many options!

I had been volunteering on the mental health programme with The Mighty Roar for 2 weeks in Sri Lanka and it was sub par. The actual programme itself was terrible, the programme had stated that we would be paired with an English speaking psychiatrist who would translate everything for us. However, this was barely the case with the volunteers being ignored by the doctors. The communication on the programme was poor with volunteers not knowing where or when they would be going to their programme until the night before. The accommodation itself was not up to standard with mould in the bedrooms and bathrooms. The bathroom did not have any hot water. I know that the accommodation was basic but I do at least expect it to be kept in good condition. The team was not useful especially when there was a problem with a volunteer - one volunteer had gotten so drunk that they had passed out on our balcony. We had called the local team and asked for help. We had been told that they would come and help but no one had turned up. Me and another volunteer was left to “babysit” this volunteer who had a record of doing this in the accommodation. This had kept us up until 2am which should not have happened as it was not our responsibility. The food was repetitive and of poor quality with maggots being found in the food one of the nights whilst I had stayed there. A large proportion of volunteers had left early due to everything that had been stated above. In addition, we were not provided transfers back to the airport. You could enquire about a transfer with the local team but this was more than double of what Uber and locals in the tourist town of Hikkaduwa would charge. The weekend trips were not worth the money as you would be rushed with time limits and wouldn’t do most of the things that the handbook had said about the trip. The weekend trips had included hotels but you would be required to share a room with 3 other people. In one of the rooms there were two small double beds to share between 4 people. It was extremely uncomfortable to share a bed with people you have only recently met and for the price of £200 during the off season in Sri Lanka, it seemed a rip-off just like the whole programme. If it wasn’t for the people that I had met whilst volunteering, this trip would have been a disaster.
