Spending 3 weeks doing childcare volunteering in Tanzania was the most amazing experiences and exceeded all my expectations! The local team were incredible at ensuring we were looked after and got to experience everything we wanted to. There was so many activities to get involved in during the afternoons after volunteering which made the experience even better! However, ultimately getting to spend time with the children was the highlight of my trip and I’m looking forward to my next trip with The Mighty Roar!
I went to Sri Lanka this July with TMR with 3 other friends and had the most incredible time. Ayomi and her team (particularly Lily, thaksi and Mammu) were incredibly friendly and helpful, as well as devoted to ensure we had the best possible time. We did the turtle volunteering, and whilst our first week was a little quiet, (to be expected at this time of year) the abundance of hatchlings the remaining weeks really made the waiting worth it! The litter picks are not glamorous, but important regardless and if you get bored of this it is easy to switch to one of the other volenteering programs for a week or a few days so you can experience even more of Sri Lanka. The accommodation is somewhat basic but has everything you need. The social space is really good and the food, whilst incredible initially can get a little repetitive so do factor that into your budget as by your second/third week onwards you WILL be wanting to eat elsewhere. The weekend trips are amazing but very busy and with a lot of driving. We went on the safari and hill country one and LOVED it. The hotels were incredibly basic and a little grubby in places but the sights and experiences we had on the trip made it well worth it. The location of the accommodation is also very useful, just across the road from a beautiful beach, down the road from simple beach bar, 10 min tuktuk (usually about £3) to hikkaduwa and the same on the bus (but for under 20p!). Ambalagonga is also nearby but a little less targeted at tourists so you probably wouldn’t want to go more than a couple times. We also really enjoyed the 40 minute bus ride to Galle for day trips, it’s a beautiful city with lots to do! We organised our own weekend trip to Kandy as well which was well worth it. The taxi was fairly expensive (about £40 each when going with 3 others) but felt pretty safe and comfortable and Ayomi booked and organised it for us. I would recommend TMR to anyone looking for a fun and safe travelling adventure, it was perfect for our post alevels trip and we would love to try some of the other projects in the future. If you can overlook the mossies, slightly broken showers, and repetitive food you will have the time of your life, I promise!
I really enjoyed my time in Sri Lanka on the medical elective. I do physiotherapy and they were able to accommodate this and connect us to the right people at the hospital. The family and staff are all lovely and very happy to help in any way. The food was very tasty, if a little repetitive. If you have specific Diet requirements your options become more limited. I went on the hill country weekend trip which I enjoyed. You get to see lots of things within the weekend, however, you don’t get to spend much time in one place. If there is somewhere you would like to visit specifically I would recommend arranging your own transport/arranging a taxi or bus through TMR and do things at your own pace.
I did my medical elective in Sri Lanka for 4 weeks and the whole family are so lovely! They are really accommodating and try to help with anything you need. Cannot fault the effort they put in to give volunteers the best experience in Sri Lanka. They organised lots of activities including kayaking and surfing which were really fun. The food provided tastes great but it is the same handful of Sri Lankan dishes with little variety so not ideal if you have dietary requirements, though you can easily eat out in Hikkaduwa. The hospitals are chaotic so be prepared to fend for yourself! Did mean that there was little teaching/hands on experience but that was expected and not a reflection on TMR. I'd recommend making plans to travel away each weekend. You get very little time to actually explore places on the weekend trips, but you do get to experience specific activities which would be harder to organise on your own so mixed opinions about whether the trips are worth it.
We were doing the medical elective as Physiotherapy students as part of our university placement. We were volunteering in the hospital for less time than I expected and was mainly observational. Although as physiotherapy students it seems we were able to get more involved than the medical students, with more hands on practice. We got to learn some Ayuverdic traditional herbal medicine which was interesting and very different from the Western medicine we know. Volunteering for less time allowed us to explore the beautiful wider area here and on weekends going further away which was fun. However, there were some experiences that made us feel unsafe outside of the mighty roar, so you must keep your wits about you and stay with others. The local team here were lovely and welcomed us warmly into their family and were able to arrange some extra trips for us including kayaking and surfing.
I have recently spent 3 weeks in Sri lanka with TMR on the childcare programme. Overall the best experience, having never travelled either. The team are all very friendly and accomodating to all needs. There was organised activities such as football, cricket and meditation in the weekdays. I went on the Hill country safari weekend trip which was amazing and got to do a lot in the two days. Id also reccomend traveling to other places on weekends. The childcare programme was very good, it was every morning monday to friday and then had afternoons to do other activities which we mainly went to Hikkaduwa and Galle. It was a sad goodbye after 3 weeks and would highly recommend to anyone thinking about doing it.
I had a great 3-weeks completing my medical elective in Sri Lanka! When I had some issues with a cancelled flight on my way to Colombo, I was very grateful that Ayomi and the local team were so responsive and flexible :) The medical programme itself was varied across 2 different hospitals and many different wards. We also got exposure to ayuvedic medicine which I found very interesting! Although it was a largely observational experience, some doctors were kind enough to provide some teaching. My only comment would be that there seemed to be more medical students than normal which made organising us all more difficult. I really appreciated the extra activities the local team arranged and had lots of fun on the cultural triangle weeknd trip! Thanks everyone!
This was one of the best experiences I have had. There were so many opportunities presented to us from weekend trips to daily activities. Our Hill County Safari weekend trip was run amazingly with a wide variety of sights from a tea factory to the lively city of Ella. There was always offers to bond with other volunteers and staff through our volunteering programme. I met so many new friends in childcare, in the accommodation and even in optional activities like meditation and football. There was a useful amount of time dedicated to volunteering but equally an enjoyable amount of time to explore Hikkaduwa and relax.
I spent a month with The Mighty Roar completing the medical elective programme. I have massively enjoyed my time at The Mighty Roar! The opportunities are great both for the medical programme and in general. There is always activities put on as an extra which is a really good way to make new friends and get involved. If you are completing the medical program, you have plenty of opportunity to see lots of different ward settings and there is opportunity to go to multiple hospital plus a herbal clinic. Everybody is super friendly and all the staff are wonderful. They are always willing to help and they make it feel like a second home ! Would definitely recommend if you have the chance :)
the local team are all lovely and try to make your stay as comfortable as possible. a lovely family vibe throughout. doing the turtle conservation means that there isn't really much to do during the day as you do your beach clean for approx an hour during the day and then don't have any more duties until at least 8:30pm. hikkaduwa (the local village) doesn't really have much to do and so if the weather isn't great you're a bit stuck for things to do. the meals were always lovely although did begin to feel repetitive very quickly so i would recommend going into town for dinners a few times. overall a good stay would recommend the program more for 16-18yr olds who are looking for their first taste of freedom from school or mid alevels but still need a bit of structure. we were doing this after 5 months of backpacking so we found it to be a little boring after everything else we had been doing
It was always going to be an incredible experience and almost every aspect of it was. The Mighty Roar were incredible especially with regards to the travelling. Only slight thing was the organisation and that’s for across the travelling and volunteering with some days unsure what’s happening. Overall though an amazing experience
Spending one month at the mighty roar in Sri Lanka was a fantastic experience. Being surrounded by so many other volunteers was a great way to make friends and enjoy my time outside of the volunteering. I took part in both sea turtle conservation and English teaching which were good fun - if anything, id want more volunteering included, as opposed to more free time relaxing. The organisation out on many activities throughout the week, such as, meditation, surfing, football and swimming with sea turtles. Less repetition for those that were there for a while would have been nice however! The team were generally quick to sort any issues around the accommodation but if you're fussy with either food or living conditions then I wouldnt recommend it. The mighty roar team in Sri Lanka were incredibly welcoming and really made everyone feel at home.
Well organised transfers to and from the airport, helpful information and kind contacts during time doing Sea Turtle Conservation in Greece. Great experience.
Had the most amazing experience volunteering with TMR in Tanzania🇹🇿 Everything was so organised meaning we made the most out of every opportunity we had. Emmanuel and Alice were also amazing as well as all the lovely staff at the hostel! Would definitely volunteer here again! Thank you so so much!
An amazing company. Supported us all the way through and looked after us so well when we were there. We went to Bali to do teaching in the school and it was such an incredible experience, all the kids and teachers were so lovely. Cannot recommend enough!
I went to Tanzania as part of my 4 week nursing elective and extended an extra two weeks as I just loved it so much that I didn’t want to leave. I was so warmly welcomed by all the staff and they really couldn’t have done more for me. I was so worried about coming on my own but it’s the best decision I’ve ever made as I never thought I would have an experience so incredible. I recommend Tanzania to everyone I meet. It exceeded my expectations more than I thought was possible. If you are deciding if you should go and you are reading this, just do it. You will have the time of your life. The place is beautiful and the comfy stay hotel was really just my home. The staff will be my friends for life and I miss and love them all so so much. The best 6 weeks of my life, I can’t wait to come back. Thank you for everything Tanzania team!
Had an amazing 6 weeks in Ghana! Everyone was so lovely and welcoming, Dinah couldn’t of been a better host, I felt totally safe the whole time, the staff at Dadsons lodge, Tina’s place and the schools were all so friendly and made my time there so special!
I did the childcare programme in Ghana for 2 months and really enjoyed my time here. It was a fantastic experience and getting to know the locals made it even more special. Everyone was so friendly which made it easy to settle in quick. I loved how flexible it was, for example I split my week up at the school and 1 day at the hospital (even though I had no experience in this department) it was a great experience overall, gaining opportunities and valuable experience you wouldn't necessarily get at home. The mighty roar team were brilliant, lead by Dinah, they were all approachable, friendly and very helpful, ensuring our safety at all times. Big shout out to Dinah who was very caring, supportive and super friendly and became a very good friend of mine. Nothing was too much for her and she does a smashing job day in and day out catering for all needs and characters. She dealt with any situations quickly and managed them appropriately, seeking further support when needed. I would highly recommend the mighty roar, it was a fantastic experience, had most things you need to know in the handbook, had step by step instructions on how to get everything sorted before coming and there was always someone to contact if you had any trouble at all. I would 100% do it all over again, so a big thank you to the whole team!
The local team were very attentive and sweet. Dinah, Abigail and team go above and beyond to ensure everyone is safe and enjoying the trip. Would not recommend for anyone under 18 or still in secondary school due to level of independence required.

Aug 03,2024I spent the month of June in Sri Lanka on the teaching programme and I thoroughly loved it and couldn’t recommend it more! The whole team including Ayomi and her family members welcomed me into their home and made me feel thoroughly supported and able to fully embrace the new culture and opportunities available to me. The location of the accommodation is amazing, being only a short 5-10 minute tuktuk or bus ride into Hikkaduwa, where they are plenty of restaurants, shops and things to do. At first it was a little daunting sharing a room with 7 strangers, but the bunk beds are spacious and the mosquito nets made it feel cosy. The teaching programme is really exciting since you get to teach at multiple schools. We also got to go into the local primary school and observe and assist in a local teacher’s English lesson. We spent time each day planning our lesson with Tharushika making sure the English lesson is appropriate, realistic and engaging. The children are amazing- so full of energy and enthusiasm to learn English! I would really recommend Sri Lanka as a destination for first time travellers or people wanting to experience a new culture, the location of the Mighty Roar camp makes it a perfect place to experience the local culture, and also travel and see other areas of Sri Lanka. I did both the Cultural Triangle weekend trip and the Hill Safari trip, and would really recommend them to everyone who wants to try and see as much of Sri Lanka as possible in a short space of time while participating in great activities such as safaris, hiking up Sigiriya rock, visiting famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites and going out in Ella and Kandy! I came on this trip as a solo traveller and it was really easy to make plans with people for things to do, and nice knowing my weekends were already sorted. I’ve made some great friends and absolutely loved my time in Sri Lanka and couldn’t recommend it more!
