I’ve just finished the volunteer and travel programme with the sea turtles in Sri Lanka. I had the most amazing time, Ayomi and her team went above and beyond to make sure we were all safe, comfortable and happy. I was very fortunate to see turtles laying eggs, baby turtles hatching which then led to releasing them into the ocean, all of which I believe is a once in a lifetime opportunity! The accommodation is very basic, but I expected no less, it was clean and well kept and the food was delicious every day! The travelling although full on and tiring was also unbelievable, we managed to fit so much in in the 9 days, and did so many things I would never of dreamt of. The hotels we stayed in were very clean, comfortable and well kept, the food throughout was fantastic and a real look into how the locals eat. I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to volunteer and isn’t brave enough to go completely solo!!
We spent a week volunteering in Sri Lanka at the turtle project - but because there were no turtles laying or hatching, we flipped to the street dog project. We were also the only volunteers staying. This probably made it a very different experience: much less sociable, but more engagement with the local community and the Sri Lankan families who live and work in the compound. My 14-year-old daughter was initially rather wobbly about the strangeness of it all - the mangey dogs (and they really are NOT like English dogs!), the foreign noises and smells, the unusual food, the requirement to step up. But she really did step up, and as an animal lover got a lot from the project. Life lessons in just a week were huge, from beach cleaning & the environment, to dog dynamics, to Buddhism. It was a very bonding experience for us both. And as an older woman, I was delighted to find that I wasn't sharing the small dorm with 6 gap year students... let alone the bathroom. Our great thanks to Ayomi and family, and the team at Mighty Roar for making it such a friendly and human experience. We will be using you again.
I spent 4 weeks in Tanzania completing my medical elective. It was a fantastic experience and the opportunities in your free time are endless. The staff at The Comfy Stay Hostel are so accommodating and nothing is ever too much for them. I highly recommend travelling here!
The staff and organisation couldn’t have provided a better experience for me while I was volunteering. Very friendly and helpful, made the experience so enjoyable whilst also giving us the opportunity to give back to the community.
Very good communication from the team in the UK, making sure all our info was updated on app and answering any queries we had. Had a wonderful experience. Highly recommend Amakhala in South Africa.
Spent 3 weeks at the Turtle Sanctuary and managed to participate in Turtles/ Kindergarten and the Dog programmes. All were excellent and well managed. Accommodation was good and nothing was too much trouble for the team. The weekend trip was a great opportunity to see more of Sri Lanka and the Maldives trip was great fun.
My time in Tanzania was honestly life changing. The team were so accommodating and friendly and constantly made sure we had the best time. I wish I could’ve stayed longer, it was an experience I’ll never forget. Thank you !
Loved it, had the best time!
Communication with mighty roar was prompt - however compared to those that booked through IVHQ was lacking in certain aspects. For example - I repeatedly asked about a private room but was told this could only be booked when got there - which is not true and had to be booked in advance. Also was the IVHQ WhatsApp group that was a much better way of making contact with other volunteers - why does mighty roar insist on Facebook? These are definite improvements that could be put in place. The programme was good but we were not sure what the data we collected was used for so making the clearer would be good. Thanks
I loved my 3-month stay in Sri Lanka. Ayomi and the team were so welcoming, accommodating and helped me with any problems that I had. I would really recommend the experience. I think a month would be the perfect amount of time to stay there though
Amazing time at Amakhala. Great to feel a homely vibe when being at the lodge. You get to do and see a lot for your money's worth!
I loved everything and would recommend it to anyone. I had a great time, learned a lot, met lots of new people, had an amazing experience and would definitely do it again.
The team in Sri Lanka are really excellent - so helpful, nothing was too much trouble, it was easy to get a tuk tuk into town or a taxi further afield and the drivers very reliable. Pick-up from the airport very smooth despite a delay on our part. We were working on the turtle conservation project and released 72 baby turtles into the sea, an incredible experience. The other volunteers were delightful and a nice mix - mostly young (pre and post uni) but not exclusively. The weekend trip was really interesting and action packed - we could never have seen this much of Sri Lanka had we tried to organise it ourselves and it was nice to go in a group. Loved the elephant safari. The accommodation was fine and the food was good.
This project seemed more geared towards people on their ‘gap year’. There was some clinical time allotted in the mornings but the rest of the day was unstructured, with not much to do other than sit on the beach. If you’re a practitioner looking to gain as much international clinical experience as possible in your limited annual leave, do not choose this organisation.
Fantastic opportunity for my grand children to be involved in sea turtle conservation and kindergarten programme. Great group of people on the programme Friendly and helpful staff including availability of tuk tuk drivers. Beds were comfortable with mosquito nets. Showers good and hot. Very noisy at night so limited sleep Food repetitive and basic, but staff met special requests. The main eating and gathering area would benefit from overhead fan to manage fly's. Laundry service needs improvement. Overall my grand children have had a wonderful experience.
They help you alot but there were a lot of other projects at the same place. I went to the dog sanctuary in Cape town and was told I would be in a hostel but was in a host family
Spent 3 weeks in Thailand doing a mix of wildlife and elephant care. It's a long day and you do work hard but I really enjoyed. Accomodation and food are basic but fine. The work you do is rewarding and you can see the impact you have. Yes it long days etc but if you arent keen on something talk to staff and they will move you round. I think Comms need to be better on wildlife but nothing major. Great experience
Very good service, helped me along every step of booking and getting ready for my trips.
The India medical experience would not have been the same without the incredible team out there. There is a real family feel and they will do absolutely anything possible to help make your experience amazing, including tailoring your hospital placements as much as possible. Highly recommend!

Jan 21,2024A very welcoming and safe environment. The programmes were well considered. I was on the dog programme in Sri Lanka. It was great for a week! We got to feed the dogs in tuk tuks and take some puppies to the vets. We became so close to all the dogs and basically knew all their names by the end of the week! The food provided was incredible - proper local Sri Lankan food - and the accommodation was clean and well kept. I made great friends during my stay. I would recommend this as a first travelling experience. To make it an even better experience for all ages, I’d recommend that the mighty roar provide more information about their audience demographic and what to expect during the week. For instance, 90% of the group were on their gap year, no alcohol was allowed in the premises and we had a curfew of 10pm every night. This is absolutely ok (of course!) however, I am 27, and had stayed in hostels for the week prior, so this was a slight contrast and I think would have been beneficial to have more information about this going into the week. I hope this is helpful!
