ELEPHANT rescue in THAILAND (end of Nov 23) You will work from 6.30 am till 5 pm with two one hour breaks for breakfast and lunch. Work is constant and demanding and includes carrying heavy banana trees on your shoulders, making banana balls for the elephants and lots of cleaning. You are expected to work, not to hang around. Food is great and accommodation simple but clean. Staff is nice, Jam the elephant team coordinator is super nice and a boss everyone would like to have. You will see and interact with the elephants quite a lot, you can see an elephant even from the dining area. I would have given 5 stars but the amount of work and long working hours were something a lot of volunteers were not very happy with.

I have just returned to the UK following 4 weeks of volunteering on the street dog and sea turtle conservation projects with The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. Ayomi and the whole local team were wonderful throughout my time there. The friendly and welcoming nature of everyone involved on the project made my first volunteering trip the great experience that it was! I especially loved working on the street dog project and will miss all the dogs and puppies I got to feed and care for, as well as being a valued member of the team. The accommodation is basic but comfortable. The Sri Lankan curries served were thankfully mild and very tasty! I enjoyed coming together with all the other volunteers at meal times when Ayomi would often use this time to socialise and check in with us. A tip about clothing; if you are working on the street dog or sea turtle projects, wearing clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is not expected, but if you are working on any of the child care projects you will need to. If you are considering volunteering with The Mighty Roar on any of their projects in Sri Lanka I would definitely say go for it :)

The people were amazing, and very friendly. They arrange weekend trips, and it's an amazing experience for all. The mornings are quite early depending on which course you're doing, but it's a very enjoyable experience! The people you meet there are amazing, and very helpful. You can make amazing friends there, and help people and animals! Great experience.

I did 4 weeks in Sri Lanka doing the dog rescue program and it was amazing!! All the staff and other volunteers there were super welcoming and lovely, even when I arrived a few days later than expected Ayomi still made sure I had the same welcome experience to everyone else. Learning about the culture and being able to explore Sri Lanka as well as doing the volunteering was great and the weekend trips and day activities like surfing etc. that TMR organise are so fun and would definitely recommend booking on to at least one when there! The only downside is I couldn’t take all the dogs home with me :) Thank you!

We had the most amazing week volunteering at the Elephant sanctuary. Don’t think about it, just do it! Making memories and helping these wonderful creatures. What could be better?

Ayomi, Karu, Mamu and the whole team were very accommodating, helpful when planning events for us to join in on and activities. They helped us to organise transport when going out for the day or going away for the weekend as some of us did, to explore Sri Lanka. I Spent 4 weeks on the medical programme as part of my university programme, ayomi listened to our issues and concerns and worked to resolve these such as changing areas within the hospital. The experience has really helped my professional development and outlook on life, seeing the difference in healthcare and understanding unique medical problems such as snake bites. Despite partaking in the medical placement, i got involved in the other programmes such as feeding the street dogs and teaching the primary school children, which was a great experience! All the other volunteers were great and everyone got along well, we even took weekend trips away together to explore Sri Lanka.

It was an amazing month in Sri Lanka with plenty experiences in culture and nature. Everyone made us feel welcomed and wanted us to be happy. I really appreciated that you can easily join more than one project, so I was able to do turtles and childcare. It was great to see the outcome and effort of your work in seeing baby turtles hatch and releasing them, so that all the beach cleanings were worth it. It also always put a smile on your face during work with little energised children. And it was absolutely cool to meet the other volunteers, we had a great community! On the weekends you could join a trip (I did the hill country and safari one) that showed you as many different sides from Sri Lanka as possible, I especially loved the Safari as well as visiting Ella. But we also went to different cities on our own what made your group stick together again. Luckily we were able to be part of the perahera festival which takes place once a year. Overall an unforgettable time and also perfect for the first time discovering the world and travelling on your own.

Had a great 3 weeks in Sri Lanka, everyone made us feel so welcomed. Really enjoyed the childcare program and getting to know all the little personalities at the kindergarten! The weekend trips were also a great way to see other parts of the country - would definitely recommend the Maldives one too! Overall a great experience, great if this is your first time travelling too!

I did a 4 week medical placement from October to November. This placement was a requirement through my university. TMR organised all the placements and transport to and from which was great! And assigned us to a different area every week so we could experience as many areas as possible, they do stick to your requests too. Elpitiya hospital is lovely. All the staff are kind and very helpful. Most staff have limited English but the doctors do tend to have good English and will explain everything to you. However, balapitiya hospital wasn’t as great. The staff were rude and kept asking us why we were there, and that it’s pointless as we don’t speak the language. I understand the language barrier is difficult and most of us put in effort to learn simple terms such as “hello” and “thankyou but it is extremely difficult. A lot of us felt uncomfortable going to this hospital on placement because you were told to sit in a corner by the staff whilst they would look at you and laugh from across the room. We had a discussion with Ayomi about this issue and how we all felt uncomfortable and she went and had a discussion with the head of the hospital at balapitiya and we were transferred back to elipitya for the duration of the trip. This was dealt with immediately. The accommodation: the accommodation is basic, I shared a room 4 other people and we were able to stick together as a group as 3 of us are from the same university. The rooms are basic, but you are provided with a locker with a key to lock your valuables away. The suitcases perfectly fit under the bed and there is also aircon and mosquito nets. The rooms are cleaned once a week and you are provided with fresh linen and towels. I must say it is great when you come home from a weekend trip and your bed is freshly made! We did have a few issues with cockroaches and lizards, but the staff were more than happy to come in and get rid of them and provide us with some spray to prevent them from coming in, this can’t be helped and is not the staffs fault! If you required any extra towels or blankets, they were more than happy to provide them for you! You are also required to wash your own clothes, they provide a bucket for you and there are washing lines where you can hang them out. There is a washing machine available and you can give your kids washing to the family and they will do it for you. The food: the food was really nice, I wouldn’t say I’m a picky eater but I’m not great with spice. However there was always something to eat! The staff: the staff are amazing at TMR and are always around to help. Especially the chef who’s cooks all the meals, he is so lovely and can’t do enough for you. He’s always smiling :) The driver is also amazing, he’s driven us around Sri Lanka on very long drives and always has a smile on his face. If you ask the driver to take you somewhere out of the way he’s more than willing to and nothing is too much of an ask! Ayomi is so helpful when we have issue to arise. She deals with them in a timely manner and is always asking to look at pictures we’ve taken on trips and what we’ve been up to. Ayomi is always organising activities for us to do as a group such as football, surfing, kayaking and cricket. Is is always asking what we would like to do as a group and asks for suggestions Karu and Mamo are lovely people and have a great sense of humour. They came on a few trips with us and would always keep us safe and warn us about any scams etc and make sure our trip went as smooth as possible and we had fun! The trips: I went on two of the weekend trips, the cultural triangle and the hill country weekend safari. I preferred the one that included the sigiriya rock as did many others. The trip seemed a lot more chilled than the other one and everything was paid for bare the massage which was optional. Overall the weekend trips were both great, however I would personally book onto the one with sigiriya rock included as you get so much more for your money. We also had the opportunity to experience other programs such as the turtle programme, the dog rescue and childcare. They are very flexible and are more than happy for you to participate in other programmes. Overall, this was a great experience. I would definitely book with TMR again. It is hard I must, but the staff make your stay so enjoyable. I would definitely book with TMR again for future travelling

I spent 6 weeks in Sri Lanka on the medical programme for my medical school elective. Everything was very well organised and I felt well supported throughout the whole placement, as well as getting to experience the trip of a lifetime. Would recommend to anyone wanting to start travelling but wanting a bit more support than full-on solo travel.

The Mighty Roar Sri Lanka was the most fabulous experience for us (myself, 7&13yr children). The project work with turtles, street dogs and local children (at school & kindergarten) was exciting, fun & rewarding. And TMR staff were always super kind, helpful & organised. All round an amazing experience working on really worthwhile, ethically run projects. Thank you TMR!

Spent two weeks volunteering in Sri Lanka and was such an amazing experience. I was very worried before travelling as it was my first solo trip but the team organise everything beforehand making life easier. Ayomi and Thaksi were brilliant and so welcoming and couldn't do enough for you. I loved that it was a family run accommodation and helped to settle in quickly. The programs were so rewarding and cannot recommend enough and 100% the Maldives weekend trip was worth it! Definitely an experience you wont forget.

Had an amazing month on the mighty roar's volunteering program in Moshi, Tanzania. Emmanuel Maro was great at welcoming us, as were all the staff at the hostel, all of whom we really miss now we're back home! Teaching in the primary school was a great experience. Plenty of opportunities for fun trips out too- like safari or visiting a village that grows and makes coffee and has a fantastic waterfall. Would definitely recommend!

Visiting and volunteering in Tanzania through The Mighty Roar, was such a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I would recommend to absolutely anyone who wants to open their mind and heart to travelling and volunteering. All staff were so kind and helpful in organising amazing activities, trips or just social things. The people I've met, whether it be teachers at the school, students, staff, locals or other volunteers were all the best, and really helped to form my experience as something amazing and better than I could have imagined. I've made some life-long friends for sure! The food is delicious, especially the variety between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, the views and the countryside (particularly if you have the chance to visit Arusha, or climb Kilimanjaro) are some of the most lusciously green, stunning, and breathtaking scenery I've ever seen. Finally, volunteering in the local school via the teaching programme was such a fulfilling experience. The children are so eager to learn, often so intelligent (considering learning another language is not easy) and overall I had fun helping other teachers to teach, teaching them my own things and playing with them. I miss it so much! In short, I would recommend to anyone interested in visiting Africa, to take that big leap! Tanzania was the best experience of my adult life and I hope to return there soon.

What an amazing experience! Everyone involved has been kind, helpful and welcoming. The children and staff in schools were wonderful. Winyoo and his team are amazing! They also put on some wonderful trips where we learned more about Thai life, got a chance to chat with Thai people and even got to build a toilet from clay and plastic bottles! It has been fantastic - I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

I had an amazing time in Sri Lanka. I wanted to thank Ayomi and the staff for providing such a beautiful experience. I made some amazing friends and lived so many unforgettable adventures. I was very pleased with all the vegetarian and vegan options offered during the meals, and with Ayomi’s will to organise stuff for us to do as a group outside of the volunteering. The only thing I would suggest for anyone interested in the turtles program, would be to avoid travelling in September/October as we haven’t been able to see many hatching. Nothing that the team could control, obviously. The good thing is that you can easily switch programs if you feel like trying new things, and I had an amazing time taking care of the stray dogs, especially with Thaksi, who’s been a ray of sunshine during this whole experience! Would definitely recommend

Was easy to book through the Mighty Roar. The Naankuse prodject in Nanbia was a fantastic experience. The volunteers ages ranged from 18 to 65 with the majority being under 30. Everyone is is really friendly and from all over the world. You will see loads of wild animals and the resident goats. Other project's around Nanibia can be booked there which keeps things interesting. Note to the guys the women out number us here 10 to 1 just saying.
