Problem: Worsening strong damp smell downstairs. A very swift response to my initial contact, Andy visited within a few days and made a thorough investigation as to the origin of the smell. He discovered that my air bricks were becoming clogged with cavity wall insulation, a common problem apparently. He recommended that I double the size of the existing air bricks and install a couple of additional ones to allow a greater through flow of air under the flooring which was highlighted in a comprehensive written report. Once this work was completed, it was only a couple of days before results began to show, 2 weeks later I can confidently say that the problem has been resolved. I can highly recommend this fantastic service hence the 5stars. Communication was also excellent, as was the attention to detail in his explanation of the issue. Thank you Damp detectives!
Jonathan Young was our surveyor. We have a damp problem and the nature of the problem was explained to us in clear terms backed up by measurements, observations and deductions. We were also given advice on remedial actions and future lifestyle to minimise return. No hard sell of products or contractors. Overall... value for money as we will not be spending out on unnecessary work!
Had Paul Town carry out a damp survey for us. Paul was both professional and thorough. He explained every step of the way what he was doing and his findings. The report was detailed but clear and understandable. Apart from the survey Paul was friendly, humorous and i felt at ease while he was at my property.
Really detailed investigation of the whole house - inside and out. Good knowledge. Clear guidance. Approachable and professional - nice manner.
Jonathan Young carried out a really thorough investigation, using a variety of meters and cameras and then considering and weighing up that information, to determine the possible contributing factors to my long term damp problem. He then shared all the information, explaining thoroughly the results and steps that could be taken to try and resolve the issue in order of priority. Very professional service and yet easy to get on with. I am so glad that I chose to use the services of Damp Detectives in order to get a comprehensive plan of action; money well spent! Thank you.
The Damp Detective was great. Hugely helpful service, using specialist equipment to find problem areas of damp in the house and cameras on 10-metre poles to take close-up photos of roof damage and other potential causes of leaks and damp. A really thorough examination and very helpful debrief with Thomas to explain all his findings. Highly recommended for surveying and identifying the cause of damp or moisture in the home.
Had Andy out for a problem, very thorough inspection & hopefully solved the mystery. Very friendly service too
Surveyor Jonathan Young CSRT tIOSH. Jonathan arrived on time and paid me the courtesy of removing his shoes indoors. He listened carefully to my concerns, the history of the problem and previous remedial action before commencing the survey. His survey was thorough, including using thermal imaging, damp meter readings and a camera in the cavity wall. He took time to demonstrate his findings with clear and patient verbal explanation (I am deaf), supported by photographs and diagrams, answering all questions with expertise and due consideration. He even scooted up a large spider in the kitchen for me and carefully deposited it outside. I am particularly reassured that Jonathan is unbiased and independent and does not work for or with any ‘damp proofing’ or insulation company. I have already recommended him to a couple of friends.
Had Paul Ennis out, basically relayed back what I had said I thought was the problem. Damp meter showed high levels of damp - didn’t need a meter both walls and carpet were wet. Had someone out to remedy the problem who then pointed out cracks in ground level drainage channel, completely missed by Mr Ennis. Requested delay to follow up appointment only to have email bounce back. Emailed company and have had no reply. Disappointing service.
Can recommend From start to finish it was a very professional service. Bob was thorough, knowledgeable and helpful. So good to get the problem identified and to have a straightforward solution to work with. Thank you.
We used the services for a survey of the house we have an offer on, Scott was detailed on the process, prioritized our work and give callbacks to explain in details the doubts I had. Highly recommended!
Could not recommend Damp Detectives and Scott highly enough. Scott was super accommodating, we are trying to buy a flat and wanted a second opinion on the damp; Scott managed to squeeze us in so the sale time wasn't impacted. He was incredibly diligent and took me through the issues and as well as how to combat them. Furthermore because they only do surveys you know they won't try to upsell you.
PMMS use Paul Town from Damp Detectives as our go to consultant in respect of damp and mould. We have been using him for five years and his reports have detail yet are straightforward He is both approachable and helpful. Christopher Keivit Property Maintenance & Management Services Ltd
Paul from Damp Detectives helps our local authority with the more complex damp issues that occur within our housing stock. He is always helpful and the reports produced are simple to understand with advice for residents and remedial work often simple to implement. William B Gravesham Borough Council
Andy did a brilliant job of detecting the source of my damp problem, which had previously stumped surveyors, builders and damp companies. A lovely guy who explained clearly what action needed to be taken to solve the problem, and best of all, a solution that will not cost a fortune. Thank you Andy, you have solved the mystery, which has puzzled many before you.
Really informative, independent so no agenda, broad spectrum of options and took time to listen to the issue and look deeply into the problem with real expert knowledge. Really glad we went for this, thank you for your time!
Having had excellent advice from Paul in 2020, we contacted him again about another damp issue. He put a lot of time and effort, asking the right questions into finding out what might be the cause. We haven't yet employed our builder to hopefully rectify the problem but feel a lot more confident going down the route that Paul suggested. Hopefully saved us from having to employ expensive damp course companies who took little interest in delving deeper than they needed to.
I'm giving them one star they turned up on time and were pleasant. The survey was terrible things was missed out. Apparently I miss understood when they said will send the report by email. That meant about 20 lines in a email (no pictures) not a report attached to the email. The survey of a small patch of mold/damp in a small bedroom £495. It was £245 for the email. Absolute rip. Absolutely useless 'report' you can't send it to a insurance company or management company they would just laugh at you. Asked for an invoice they said we can send you an email. I worked hard for my money and got ripped off, please keep hold of your cash!!!
Jonathan arrived promptly and asked us what we were trying to achieve with the damp survey. He then talked us through the theory of damp before investigating the various issues we had identified. He tested each site with thermal imaging and cavity cameras very carefully and explained what was happening. The situation was quite different from that explained by previous “damp specialists” who usually started by suggesting a solution. We now realise that these solutions would not have helped as the problems were misdiagnosed. Damp Detectives have allowed us to understand the issues and to come to the right solutions. Excellent support.

Nov 23,2023Jonathan Young came today. Thoroughly professional and considered and his conclusions all seem logical. He did a tier 1 survey and was with us for two and a half hours. All his suggestions were sensible and practical. I would certainly recommend him for investigating the likely source or sources of any damp problem and ideas for resolution.
