I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering with The Mighty Roar on multiple programs, and I can honestly say that my 4 weeks of childcare in Ghana have been my favorite. From the very beginning, the family and staff made me feel incredibly welcome and at home. Thanks to Dinah, Francis, Stephen, and Philomena for being so friendly and helpful throughout my time here. Every meal has been amazing. The locals are incredibly warm and kind, and throughout my entire trip, I've always felt safe and well taken care of. The accommodation exceeded my expectations; it’s clean, comfortable, and much nicer than I imagined. Plus, the local team did an excellent job organizing a variety of activities for us, giving us a chance to explore and experience more of the area. As my time here comes to an end, I’m genuinely sad to leave. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for a meaningful and unforgettable trip. The Mighty Roar has made this an incredible journey, and I will cherish the memories forever.
I just had the best 3 weeks in Moshi, Tanzania as part of my medical elective! Pre-arrival: The TMR website was very informative and thorough, especially the activity handbooks. The team were very responsive and answered all the questions I had. During: The local team were absolutely amazing <3 we had drivers who were so patient and accommodating, and who knew the best local shops and markets. The wait staff at the accommodation were so sweet, they got involved when we played games in the evening and put up with us very well! The food at the hostel was great, I think there were a few issues initially for people with dietary requirements but the staff did accommodate this. The placement was super interesting and eye-opening. I saw some really difficult stuff but the experience was incredible. I got to see a wide range of specialities and we could be flexible in where we wanted to go each day. Excursions: The coffee and waterfall trip on the first Sunday was so good, and was a nice way of getting to know the group. I did safari with TMR and it was absolutely amazing. Couldn’t have wished for a better weekend. We also went to Rau forest which the team arranged for us, and that was a great afternoon out. I met some amazing people that I’m lucky to have shared my experience with. It’s a very sociable environment with lots of opportunity to get to know people and make friends. Karaoke on a Thursday night was definitely something to look forward to every week! The only thing I would have liked to have known before going was a bit more about the local team. A member of staff implied to us that for some of the staff, the role is more ‘work experience’ than a job, and said that the money from the day trips that were put on would go to supporting the local team. This would have been good to know beforehand for budgeting purposes.
I did the sea turtle programme in Sri Lanka, was very cool to see turtles and hatchlings. The team at TMR are very friendly and there if you need help with anything. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and TMR is a good route to go if it your first time travelling or solo-travelling.
I’ve just done 5 weeks on the dog programme and have absolutely loved it! Definitely a lot of hard work and some of the dogs could be a bit of a handful at times, but if you love animals then that is never a problem. I loved being able to be so involved and have responsibilities that I wasn’t necessarily expecting, like giving dogs their meds and making decisions about their care. Also having the opportunity for extra activities and weekends away, as well as helping out on the turtle programme too meant I got so much more out of my time there. Thaksi especially was so helpful and also really got to know us which made a huge difference, and the rest of the staff and family were all so lovely I felt very at home by the end and was sad to leave.
Amazing experience with the team in sri lanka Very friendly and welcoming
I am a student nurse in Sri Lanka for the TMR medical programme. The family and staff have been very welcoming and helpful and are always on hand if you have any concerns. The accommodation is clean and comfortable and the meals tasty! I booked the weekend hill country and safari trip, led by Karu, and had an amazing time. He ensured that we were looked after and were able to pack so much into the time we had away including seeing elephants and monkeys up close, visiting the famous nine arches bridge in Ella and climbing little Adam’s peak. I highly recommend TMR and will definitely visit Sri Lanka again :)
I spent 4 weeks doing my medical elective in Sri Lanka and I had the most amazing time. The team were so friendly and helpful, particularly Thaksi, Charith, Mamu and the bar staff, the location was amazing with the beach across the road and the organised activities such as karaoke night, bar night and weekend trips away were so fun!
There were 6 of us doing the medical experience and the guys at TMR were brilliant! Everything is organised for you to make it as easy as possible and there’s loads of optional activities you can get involved in too. All of the family there are so lovely I know we were all sad to leave.
I spent 4 weeks in Tanzania with The Mighty Roar doing the dog rescue project and had the most wonderful time! The whole team at the hostel are all so kind and there to help anything you need. Would definitely recommend to anyone considering going!!😊
Easy to organise trip. I went to India for 2 weeks, and was an amazing experience. Kapil who comes to the accommodation was a life saver on many occasions, and helps you with anything you may need, and only a text message away. wouldn’t have been the same trip without him. Really worth doing.
I volunteered with the dog program in Sri Lanka and it was truly an amazing experience. I fell in love with the dogs who are always so happy to see us when we show up to feed them. We feed over 60 dogs on the streets at multiple stops and the staff knows each of them by name. I was told before this program started almost all the dogs were hairless and starving and I can’t believe the positive change the program and volunteers have had on the animals :) if you volunteer in this program be prepared to put in the work, these dogs need love and care. The staff, particularly Thaski will help you with literally anything you need they are the kindest people and seeing their dedication to these animals made this experience even more special.
I had the most amazing 4 weeks in Busua, Ghana on my medical elective. I cannot thank the local TMR team Dinah, Philomena Francis and Stephen enough! Super welcoming, friendly and helpful! There is much more to do on this trip then I anticipated! From learning to surf at the beach to learning to make the local dish FUFU from scratch. The beach is a 2 minute walk from the dadson lodge where we stayed (the staff here were so great too!) where I enjoyed swimming in the sea daily. The bar/resturant on the beach is a must visit on this trip with great food, drinks and of course enterainment from quiz night to karaoke! There is also a resort 5minute walk away with a pool and loungers. My favourite part of this trip was learning about the culture. We visited the local market which was great to see and visited the town Takoradi. We tried some local dishes which was also great. The locals here are so so friendly and make you feel at home. Regarding the placement itself, this was in Dixcove a short 10minute drive by car. The staff at the local hospital were great and very welcoming. As a medical student I got to rotate around the different department and even got to practice some of my clinical skills is the UK. I really enjoyed my placement here!! I would recommend coming to Ghana for medical elective with TMR to anyone! I would love to come back!!
I have done four weeks in Sri Lanka and Charith, Thaksi, and TMR team were absolutely fantastic. They were always happy to help with any weekend trip planning, organising transportation, and answering any questions. If there were any issues they were dealt with promptly. the location of the premises was in the perfect as it was right across the beach and not far away from Hikkaduwa a town great for shopping, relaxing, eating out, or surfing. The rooms at TMR were basic but clean, and the food was good and there was always plenty of it even if you arrived a bit late for dinner. The is a bar next door belonging to TMR with good coffee, drinks, and karaoke. I absolutely enjoyed my time with TMR and met some of the most amazing people, I had the best time in Sri Lanka.
I volunteered at WFFT for 6 weeks, via the mighty roar, and it was a truly amazing experience. I stayed at a hotel near the airport for a night and then, as transport is provided, was picked up and driven to the sanctuary, which was very helpful. The workload is certainly not for the weak, as outlined on the website, but it is so rewarding knowing that you are playing a fundamental part in so many animals’ wellbeing, especially since they have been rescued from such horrible backgrounds. If you are staying for more than 1-2 weeks you are made a team leader which is good to test your skills and responsibility (but there are always people around to give you as much help as needed). It is also really lovely as after a while you will get to know certain animals and their personalities (from a distance!!). There is a 7/11 about a 20 minute walk away, washing can be done for a good price and quickly at the accommodation, there is a bar, and lots of lovely dogs and cats roaming around. You get 1 day off a week (they try to give people who are good friends the same days off which is lovely), and it is nice to go to Hua Hin or Cha-Am for a beach day (about an hour away) - I really enjoyed going to Vana Nava Water Jungle in Hua Hin. Overall, a great experience of really important work that I would definitely recommend doing, at least for a couple weeks.
Medical elective done in Sri Lanka for 4 weeks . It was a very good experience . The food was nice , the staff was lovely and helpful . They arranged multiple activities for us daily . Rooms were basic but nice . The camp had a good vibe about it . Beach was near by and multiple shops/ restaurants were close .
Really enjoyed my four weeks medical elective at TMR in Sri Lanka. Everyone here, locals and volunteers, is so welcoming, friendly and willing to help in any way. The food is great especially if you love dahl and it's nice and easy to get to the towns nearby for a bit of shopping, food or surfing. Would highly recommend, especially if you love backyard cricket and karaoke!
I had an amazing time volunteering with TMR in Sri Lanka for three weeks! I did the sea turtle program which was both very interesting and rewarding. There was a fair bit of freetime dueing the day, but you could also help out with programs, such as the street dog program. The accomodation was basic but clean and just across the beach which was lovely. The local team was very friendly and helpful and arranged lots of fun activities such as surfing and karaoke. Meeting so many new people has been incredible and you make new friends in no time.
I loved every bit of my experience volunteering at Amakhala. Nicky, Justin and Issy were really great
had the most amazing time at Yayasan Widya Sari, i spent 2 months with the kids and loved every second of it. i can’t wait to return!

Mar 28,2025I had the most amazing time with TMR on all 4 occasions across my two gap years. All meaningful, educational and fun experiences and memories that will last forever. I have done the teaching and childcare in Tanzania twice now, two years running, and evidently it has grown into the most popular as it was incredibly busy this year, but none the less an amazing experience both times with a lovely community of volunteers. I also spent a month in Kenya, with teaching volunteers, and a month in Sri Lanka, doing the sea turtle programme, and the travel and volunteering programme. I have made friendships from all over the world and never felt like I fit in somewhere more. The mighty roar are entirely supportive, and have provided me with 90% of the information needed when asked.
